I am now a Honemeister

I finally got myself the Norton 4/8K waterstone, so I am now worthy of the "Honemeister" title beneath my username.

I found it quite easy to do and put some awesome edges on a few razors I hadn't even been using. As a result, I've shaved off pretty much all of my arm hair.

And now if people want to hire my razor sharpening services, they can. Mua ha ha ha

No, not that fast grasshopper. Now you must get an assortment of barber hones and a Corticule or two won't hurt either. Only then will you rise to that lofty level!

Where do you get them? I'd like to buy one but haven't been able to find one. Any suggestions??

I thought that to become a honemeister, you had to attend a week-long seminar hosted by Lynn and others and then pass a series of rigorous honing challenges by having to properly hone seven $10 ebay razors. Only then you get the SRP honemeister tatto and be allowed to grab the kettle of hot coals with your forearms to burn in the secret symbol of your cult. (We cannot forget the learning the secret handshake either!)

Yeah, I'm sure most people have difficulties learning to hone - but not me. I was an expert right away. :D

Yeah being a honemeister is kindof like earning your SEAL pin. :cool: You have to pass months, even years of grueling physical and psychological tests, Sharpen razors underwater, strop using nothing but your bare forearm, and split a hair 58 different ways lengthwise while only holding one end...
The grand master will then grade you at the secret high temple of the brotherhood in Ohio, at which time you will have to hone and strop a dull butter knife into shaving sharpness, with your eyes closed while standing on hot coals... :eek:
No easy task, mind you!
I am no honemeister. I have Norton, barber stones, coticules...even a spyderco......
Now, I DO do a decent job on my razors, though...... :)

So, I just got my Norton's hone in the mail yesterday...

Now I have an excuse to buy a few junky razors on Ebay to see if I can learn how to use the bloody thing.

Something tells me I should have earned the honing merit badge in the Scouts, instead of sharpening knives.

I'd go to an antique shop for those razors. You avoid the shipping and handling costs, the stress of winning the auction, and you're likely going to pay much less.

"hone meister" is a title others bestow upon you, not one that you bestow upon yourself.

Actually I thought you had to hone a "Pakistani" razor to shave-ready status before you can be a honemeister :eek:

I thought it was honing a butter knife to shaving sharpness while blindfolded, using only as 1200 grit Col. Conk razor hone in your off-hand! Or maybe it was honing a Paki razor and completing a 2-pass shave with it, with no dulling of course.

Seriously though, congratulations on your breakthroughs and successes.

You could send a couple of razors to, or sharpen a couple of razors for, one of the resident honemeisters and let them evaluate your work.

Back in the 80's, lots of guys wanted to be known as a hacker. This was before the media mis-used the term and stuck such a negative meaning on it. Everyone wanted to be a hacker, but you couldn't call yourself a hacker. It was a term of recognition your peers bestowed on you. When peers bestow the title on you, it carries sigificant weight.

why needing titles? i always consider honing is integral part of shaving with razor. good shave is meaning you have good skill. Meister is meaning persons who devoting entire life to profession or is my english making me misunderstanding?

I've tried edges from most of the top-tier honers, IMO, and without motive, Lynn is consistently the Mack, he has the rocks and more importantly the touch.

Matter of fact, the term 'honemeister' was coined by Ray Dupont, the former owner of Classic Shaving, who passed away some years ago. He applied that term to Lynn Abrams when Lynn was honing Classic's razors. He never did apply it to anyone else, though some have adopted it for their own. So as Tom said, there is only one 'honemeister.'

This is interesting to me, personally. Several years ago, I went to BobAllman's for a meet and Lynn was there. As things wound down and the cigars and lawn chairs came out, Lynn spun a yarn about this man. Very entertaining and sincere.
It seems to all come together for me now!

I have to giggle at the mention of the name Bob Allman in a straight razor forum. My last name is Allman and my uncle's name is Bob Allman. But he would be the last person to take his shaving serious enough to use a straight razor. He has a very unkept beard of the apalachan style. Not a knock on the Bob Allman mentioned if he's the custom razor maker I've heard of. Probably very opposite people.

I dunno. If your BobAllman is the same as the custom-maker, He is an awesome, down-to earth individual. A good man!
I am betting they both are! :D

I work for him in our family Masonry Contracting business. He's not a bad buy. Just that he rarely shaves.
