First face slice out of the way.

Awesome. After two WTG passes with a 5/8 Wester Brother's "Anchor" I started my third and final XTG. Before starting on the middle of my upper lip, I decided to hit the strop before getting underway, and... anyone care to guess what I did next? Came back from the strop to the lip with the razor still extended in the "stropping position". Holding it as a knife, I made a pass from the center outward- make it about one inch before catching and turning the blade perpendicular to ye old face and DRAWING IT DOWN MY UPPER LIP. 5/8" slice, not terribly deep, just enough to make the styptic feel great and myself feel like a dumbass. The worst thing was that I realized how I had the razor right as it started to snag. I am not all too sure that that did not contribute to the jerking across the face. I guess it's like scratching a new car. I have that "Whew! Now that one is out of the way, bring on the others!" feeling.

cuts will happen, its normal, no worries, just be careful that's it, nobody likes a healing cut : P

My upper lip hurts just reading that. Good thing you had a stypic pencil around. It's true that since you have it out of the way, your nerves will be calmed... like falling on a skateboard. Good luck and happy healing!

BTW...I've read somewhere that it is not advisable to strop a razor while it is in use anyway.

Really? Well, I guess this is a lesson I won't soon forget.

I've been straight shaving for a bit more than 6 months and been quite at ease for the last 2 months, thinking it was just business as usual. In the last 3 weeks, I sliced my chin 2 times... more than I ever did since I started (AKA never!).

It seems to always come when you think you're good enough to stop caring!

are you supposed to wet the styptic pencil before you use it, or just rub it try?

If I need to use it, I wet the pencil before use. It will sting a bit.

I've been straight shaving for around 8 months now, and I still cut myself on occasion. It's almost always when I switch razors though, as each of mine requires it's own unique finesse to get a great quality shave. The first few are kind of nerve racking, but you really don't even feel it. Actually you HEAR it way more than you feel it. I have gotten one small scar, but it has faded so much you really have to look for it to find it. If you put neosporin or something like that on bigger cuts they will heal just fine, although it may take a little longer on your face than say the same cut on your finger. Glad you got the hard part out of the way. Styptic Pencils are great immediate first aid for a nick/cut, and then an initial splash with witch hazel usually clears up any leftovers or irritation. Then put on your favorite aftershave. It works for me. Good luck!

Yep. A little Neo, a splash of Witch Hazel, and we were good to go. I kept applying ointment throughout the day, and wore a band-aid over it when I was in the shop yesterday. Seems to have sealed up pretty well, and I even managed to not knick it during yesterday's shave. It was an interesting conversation piece at work, BTW.
