Any polish/method that is safe on the "Gold Wash" on str8??

Does anyone know of any polish/method that is safe on the gold wash on the face or spine of many str8 razors these days? I know that MAAS takes it right off.

The only thing I know of is Windex for cleaning. It won't take rust out. Anything that will take out corrosion will also take the gold wash AFAIK.

Not I...just wiping the razor on a dry towel after your shave will begin the process of losing the gold wash....

Thanks Jimmy...not sure if I want to spray the blade with Windex though (even though ammonium is a reducing agent)

But, that's a bummer :thinking:...what you say does ring true. I have a couple of nice ones with gold wash and when wiping them on a towel, I've noticed part of the gold wash fade.

It begs the question: why make gold wash blades anyway?? We pay for the price (of Gold...$1,200 or so per oz.) only to have it wiped away.

It's a feature/option for high-end blades. It's like asking the question, why get power windows when the servo motors die in a few years and have to be replaced...why not get manual windows?

All this is based on the perception of quality. If you took two equally poor shaving Paki razors and put gold on one, it would sell considerably higher every time...much more than the cost of plating it.

You are right and as you said it: it's "the perception of quality"...you gold plate a poor blade, it's still a poor blade. However, some of the Wackers (great shavers IMHO) and others for that matter as well, do come gold plated too and they command a premium (I got 2 of them)...I guess, above and beyond what they would have fetched if they were bland. I also got 2 Thiers Issards. Don't get me wrong, I have not regreted these decisions because they are beautiful blades :)...It's just annoying to worry about not being able to keep them polished as well as the non-gold plated ones
