Blade size and comfort

Here is a question for the more experienced shavers. Ok here goes I have a few DD
2 6/8 NOS Goldedge's
3 5/8 Goldedge one is round point the other two square
1 5/8 Satinedge
1 5/8 Wonderedge round point

All of these razors were honed by a pro on this site and shave great, but what I have found is the NOS Goldedge gives the most comfortable shave I have ever had. It is even better than the wonderedge. Now is this due to being never used before I got it, or is it because it is a larger blade. It is the only 6/8 I have that I shave with currently that is until the 7/8 Filarmonica I won from eBay arrives Filarmonica Doble Temple 7/8 Straight Razor - eBay (item 170516145349 end time Jul-24-10 21:18:31 PDT)


So how about it with all things being equal does a larger blade shave with more comfort?

As with almost everything straight razor,that's highly subjective.Everyone who posts will probably have a different opinion about size.I prefer the wider blades,but that's just me.....

True, I find that a number of my 5/8s--Gotta, Boker--give me the most comfortable shaves.

Personally, I don't think that blade size has that much to do with comfort. It has more to do with the sharpness and grind of the blade, whatever its size, that is matched to the shaver's beard and shaving needs/desires. But that's just my personal opinion.

When you get right down to it, the functionality of the size of the blade is for lather removal. Larger blades will hold more lather and require less rinsing/wiping. Other than that it is pure aesthetics, as a 4/8 will shave you just as well as a big meat chopper.

Personally I have 3 blades each its own feeling and handling....I prefer 6/8 and 7/8..my smallest is a tad under 5/8..my wife uses that one..her hands are smaller..a smaller blade holds less creme so constant wiping or rinsing is needed..a larger blade holds more lather so its a bit easier...I can probably (only into it 4 months) straight shave each blade just as well as with the other ;-)...I would get different sizes and compare..again I have thick medium sized hands so holding a 5/8 is a little more hand cramping then a 7/8..hope this helps...heres a visual...

I hate to tell you this but with the exception of the Wonderedge the other ducks are the same save the scales. Now it's possible depending on the ages they could have been made by different manufacturers, that's impossible to tell. However if they are marked pearlduck they are the same.

If there are differences in performance you need to look at honing or the grinding or maybe the balance and the way you hold them or size and weight factors?

The Wonderedge is supposedly cryo steel so it's different. Maybe different manufacturer too.

It's not about the size but if it was NOS, the geometry should be pretty spot on.
Not saying razors with hone wear don't shave well but how they are worn can influence the kind of edge you can achieve. Of course there are other factors like heat treatment,forging etc. but if you have 2 the same & 1 shaves better the geometry is the easiest thing to asses & compare.
