Shaving with the heel or the point leading the razor down the stroke can lend to a much more effective shaving experience with more efficient results. I can't prove it, but I would bet some casino cash that it helps keep the shaving edge longer as well

Maybe shaving with a "slant?" I do this naturally by the way I hold the razor most comfortably, especially across the chin. I don't cut myself and the comfortable hold I believe not only facilitates cutting through the denser part of my beard but also (for me) results in a safer shave. Methinks this is probably more an issue of accepted nomenclature than technique.

Mike, As far as Im concerned, you are definitely not a noobie anymore, congrats! What a wonderful and insightful post, I hope many people read it, both old and new. I love a good smiling blade, I havent renounced my other straight edges yet, ( I love them all) but a good smiler cant be beat!

Yes, I need mmmmore razors. Funny how that works. Each blade responds different. Sometimes I find myself thinking about which razor I want to use the next day, or maybe for the weekend. That's OK isn't it? So long as I don't start talking to them in the third person. Yikes

Modine - I do the same thing. Just before I go to bed I look over my rack of razors, I think about how each one shaves and when I used it last, and then I select a razor - following which I pick my cream and brush. I set everything out and go to sleep in anticipation of the morning shave.

I need professional help.......

I use a 7-day case. I have a "Thursday" razor (from some 7-day set that someone broke up) in the Thursday slot. It's kind of cream colored, faux-ivory. I arrange the other razors from Black to white, black, tortoise-shell, dark amber, light amber, faux-ivory (Thursday) White, and my Bismarck (red) on Saturday.

It's kind of a ritual each night before bed, I get out the next day's razor, give it a light stropping, and set it on the sink.

You mean to tell me that you guys do not talk to your razors!? Thats "Blade Abuse", I will have to come to your house and assess the situation and quite possibly "adopt" some of these unloved blades!

maybe not abuse.. but definitely neglect..

as far as scything.. i have yet to try it.. i get bbs without it.. but i'd like to try it at some point just to see how it works..

also... am i mistaken in reading that slanted de's produce a scything motion naturally? can someone explain this to me?

The best way of describing the scythe motion is to compare it with a windshield wiper, an arcing movement with the wrist as a pivot.
