Keeps the razor from slipping...

Hey all,

I have an old sheffield that was a little hard to hold on to if and when the tang got wet. I found if you rub a slight coat of beeswax onto all sides of the tang it makes it just a bit tacky, preventing slippage. Very little is needed. Another benefit I found is that it actually helps prevent water from traveling onto the tang and into the hinge, thereby helping to prevent rust.

I got idea after watching surfers wax their board on tv. :hmmm:

Works great, less slipping...

Thanks! Great idea! I keep two pots of beeswax around to coat the tenons and mouthpieces of my smoking pipes, and to coat the outer bowls of my meerschaums. No reason this shouldn't be perfect too for razor maintenance. Incidentally, the cheapest way to buy beeswax is from toilet ring seals. I scoop it out, put it in the pots & microwave till it melts down w/ the rest.

Not trying to sound ignorant, what does the beeswax do for your pipe? I appreciate the tip about the toilet ring. Right now I have plenty on hand, my Dad is a beekeeper in Oklohama. The stuff is so useful though, I am bound to run out...

To each his own, but I cant imagine putting beeswax or anything else on my razors. Not sure why your razor is slippery, are you holding the razor properly?

If your razor is slippery enough to be dropped--MAKE SURE YOU WEAR PANTS!

I can't see why a straight should be slippery ?. I guess if you hold the sides of the tang then yes, but top and bottom no.

Gary, I do hold onto the top and bottom of the tang. I have many razors, of which most do not slip. Some have grooves cut perpendicularly to the length to help prevent slipage. One of my sheffields became slippery when the soapy water ran down onto the tang. I do not know why it is different from my other razors, perhaps the shape of the blade makes a difference.

I found out a way of fixing the problem of a wobbly razor as Nenad described it , and decided to post it to help out others. Nanad has experienced the same issue that I did. And I am sure Nenad has more experience than you, glerun and I put together!

Perhaps I am taking your post wrong, if so forgive my comment. Don't assume someone is a dolt, just because you have not shared the same experience.

All things aside, I see your title is garythepenman. I am assuming fountain pens (am I correct)? I love pens myself. I have several thousand dip pen nibs that I picked up over the last 15 years. What kind of pens do you like?

Mark, I admire your ingenuity, but I don’t think I will be trying it any time soon. Some razors just feel better than others in your hand. One of my ways of knowing if I am going too like the razor is how it feels when stropping. Ideas like yours should always be applauded. Keep the creative mind alive.

Hey Mark, don't take offence, none meant at all.

As for pens I collect mostly vintage ones such as Conway Stewarts, Swans, Onotos etc..
I enjoy restoring them for daily use and I'm a co-moderator at FPN which is a great friendly place to visit, pretty much like here.

I would love to have some of the pens you named off, especially the conway! In new pens, I have always wanted a Pelikan Souveran 1000. I will have to wait until I get out of school... :(

hehe, not that much, but enough not to slice my ear off :D

Anyways, I put some beeswax onto my DOVO tang and it works very well... The good thing is that it helps the grip a lot, even with wet hands, and it comes off easy, cleaning with paper tisue. I see this trick even better with smaller sizes (5/8 and down) and with polishd tangs on the upper and lower edge, like on my USA Kelly How Thompson.

Gary, holding the razor on the sides of the tang is actually prefered method for barbers, and it's taught in barber's manuals. This is more secure way, and it offers better grip, but it's a bit weird feeling using on one self. Holding onto top and bottom of the tang has weaker grip, and it's better on bigger razors (6/8 and up) and on the razors with file jimps on the tang.

Beeswax on the tenon of a smoking pipe will tighten the loose mouthpiecess and loosen the tight ones. A light coating on a vulcanite mouthpiece protects it from oxidizing (don't need this on lucite). Coating on the outside of a meerschaum bowl helps in the coloration process. I use it as part of my regular mainenance.

your razor may be slipping in your hand because your hand is wet...I never put a razor in a wet hand...accident waiting to happen...dry your hand off with towel then hold razor...no slippy
