What to tell the wife.

Well I've been bitten by the bug. I only have one shave ready razor, but I have more to be honed. I've shaved about 4 or 5 times with the straight. The only time I have enough time for a relaxing time consuming shave is on Sunday. I think I'm getting better at it. The last shave I was really proud of myself. Only one or two little nicks and a bunch of irritation on my neck in a spot I went over about ten times because I just can't seem to get that spot smooth. It's just the direction the hair grows there, I just can't seem to get it smooth there. But I didn't know about the irritation until my wife told me.Well to the point,When I went out in the sun the wife could see the irritation and nicks and again started carrying on about your going to cut your neck. Why are you doing this to yourself. Your going to get scars. And so on. I try and be nice, And I let her know that I hope I'm not going to here it every time I shave. But I been challenged now by the razor. And I'm going to get to where I can shave with a straight with no nicks. So what to tell the wife so she leaves me alone when I shave. I mean with out her being mad at me about it. I enjoy shaving with the straight razor and I'm determined to get good at it.:gwh:

Until I got to the "without her being mad at me" part of the query, I was going to suggest two loving words...

"shut up!"

Since you don't want her mad, I'd suggest "I'm learning how to do this. Millions of men have shaved this way so obviously it's possible for me, unless you married an absolutely useless twit, so please just leave me alone to figure this out."

First, I'm sure (or rather, I hope) you were exaggerating with going over a spot ten times. If it's not smooth after one or two passes, then just save it for another day -- I promise you that it will come eventually with experience.

Next, start with one or two passes. Learn the growth pattern of your beard, particularly under the jawline, as that's one of the most tedious and important aspects of shaving.

If you're still new, then the first goal should be a presentable shave. If you can feel stubble going across- or against-the-grain then don't worry about it. Master the art of minimal pressure and proper angle first, and everything else will fall in place.

That's a tough one...Many of us still get cut once in a while, it's just part of the game.
I had a little nick on my neck today, and I didn't even realize I did it. The blade, a Boker Red Injun is just super sharp....Maybe you can reason with her, Tell her it'll take you a while to get the hang of it, but once you do, You'll get super close shaves, she might like the way it feels, or do what I did, and Divorce her sorry A**, Just kidding my friend...My GF freaks out when I get a box in the mail..."What, More razor stuff?" I tell her, "No, I'm testing these products for a friend...."

If she comes in while your shaving, Remind her that you have a surgically sharp instrument in your hand, and wave it around a little for effect with a crazed look in your eye....

I don't know how long you've been married, but heck, haven't you learned to tune her out yet? Just go ahead and shave. As soon as my wife starts giving me a hard time about anything, I go right into wifey squelch mode and she just starts sounding like the teacher on the "Peanuts" movies. You know, "Wha wha wha whaw wha". that's all I hear.

I'm also new to SR shaving and I get the same speech from my wife, only less harsh. Just smile, and once you start getting DFS regularly, she will have no choice but to love the smooth skin.

Wait until the time when you give yourself a noticeable nick. It will happen eventually. When that does happen, and she notices it, tell her you did that when you were concentrating on her nagging and not your shaving.

I don't know how long you have been married but i would take it as a compliment; a sign that she still notices even little nicks on your face.

It is just that women -those creatures with no logic- have their difficult and strange ways of saying simple things :p

It sounds like you don't have too many years of marriage under your belt yet. My wife didn't even bother. She knows once I get my sights set - it's going to happen. Always been that way.

Try and turn it into something like - "Honey, do you understand how incredibly difficult this is? I am learning to tackle life's harder problems by not giving up. You should admire your guy for that."

Ok - maybe not exactly like that - but that's what it is. You are not going to let a small chunk of steel kick your butt. Period! :mace:And she should admire that in the man she married.

Easy - honey, I was having a midlife crisis and needed a new hobby. Straight razors seemed less complicated than a girlfriend.

Well, there is a way that has not been mention yet...I think. Forgive me if it has, I have not had a coffee yet.

Here's what I did, and it worked like a charm: Start by talking endlessly about your new love for this hobby. Spend all of your time on the computer searching for new razor pages, on the SRD page, ebay, etc. Then continue to speak endlessly about the razors, the differences in steel and hones, and all that lovely stuff. After a week of inundation you'll here "Oh my god, just go in the bathroom and leave me alone....have your shave, just give me two minutes of peace."

Enter the Man domain now.

Stay in the man domain for a long period of time.

Continue inundation with SWMBO. I'm now at the point where she is asking my about my razors, and thinks its "cute" that I have this "little" hobby.

Good idea - but one small problem.

If you have ended up here at the SRP site, then you probably have several of these "little hobbies" - and she ain't buyin it no more:)

Now this might work. I told her this weekend that I'm determined to not let a razor beat me, and I'll get good at this if it kills me. I also chased her out of the bathroom by telling her if she stands there and watch's me, I'll get nervous and really cut myself. She took it well and laughed and left. She's a great wife, and her only concern is for me. That's why I don't want to be mean. I think a couple more time of, I'm not giving up on this, should do it. Otherwise I'll have to use the tune her out suggestion, which I already do anyway. Thanks for all the help guy's.:boohoo:
