Interested in Getting a DE

Thanks for the advice, guys.

I'm not really from the "DE generation" like most of you (not that I'm from the straight razor generation!), so my trying them out is mainly to do with curiosity.

Joe Lerch, I get great shaves with the straight, but I kind of want to be experienced in all methods of wet shaving. In what ways do the DE razors not measure up? Or is just the Gillettes?

Thanks for the offer, Lynn! I think I may take you up on it. If I don't end up liking these shavers too much, having a rental will be a good thing. I've got plenty of Gillette DE blades to use up.

Just curious... has anyone any opinion/experience re: the Feather DE Razor I see on Classic Shaving @ ~$20? (Yes, I mean the razor... not the blades.) No one ever seems to mention it... :shrug:

I had thought about it until I picked up one from Tony about a month ago. I had never used a DE before. I remember as a kid seeing one in the bathroom and playing with the missile silo doors. My first roommate shaved with one. I figured why not try it. I actually get a pretty good shave with it, and some places are actually closer than with a straight.

Joe,

Unfortunately, the Feather DE has the reputation of a pakistani razor. Cheap and flimsy.

Too bad... that low price almost sucked me in a couple times. What an odd marketing strategy... create one of the best blades available and then pair it with a crappy razor. :shrug:

Well, if $20 bucks gets you cheap, why not spend just a few more dollars?

I would have to agree that the Gillette is a good DE. My father used one and gave me one when i started shaving. I think learning to shave with a DE was harder than with a straight. I cut myself way more with the "safety razor". I still have mine. It is my travel razor now. Although if i can find or make a nice carry box then i will travel with my straights.

That haircutting attachment for the vacuum cleaner I got at the flea market does do a nice job, don't ya think? And it was only 50-cents. :D
