How long does it take you?

While I prefer to take my time with an evening shave, I also like to be able to shave reasonably swiftly when its a morning shave, otherwise I have to get up too early!

Today I took 10 minutes over a 2 and a bit pass shave, the result was a SAS but not close. However, it was reassuring that I was able to get a fair result in just a touch more time than a DE takes me and no irritation, nicks or cuts.

I've been straight shaving couple of times a week for about 5 months and work-day shaving, with a close comfortable finish, is the next goal.

Of course, I don't expect to be as quick as that German Youtube guy without a great deal of practice but when you are watching the clock how long does a reasonable shave take you?

I shave every (weekday) morning after showering. I typically just do one pass WTG, and from building lather to wiping down the counter, it takes me about 10 minutes.

It takes me around 15 minutes and I never rush with a straight. If I'm pressed for time I use a DE.

If I face lather with a cream, 2 passes, with a straight, about 7min start to finish, not including shower, but I prefer to take my time and enjoy the shave, so three passes to BBS,soaking and loading my brush and creating lather in a bowl, stropping, shaving, witch hazel, ASB, AS, cologne, and a buff of powder to dry up any residual moisture, between 15 and 20 min.

Agreed, If I'm pressed for time, I grab the DE. Always take your time when doing a str8 shave. A couple a times, when I was pressed for time, I skipped over a few of my pre shave prep items, and the results were less than favorable. I always allow myself time for the shave, so I'm not rushed and I can enjoy it. I never really timed myself, but 15mins sounds about right....

That looks just about like mine. I add 10 minutes for the shower.

My shaves take as long as I want them to. On average, 20 min, I guess. I avoid clocks and watches as much as I can in this life.

Start to finish less than 10 minutes.(not including stropping before or after) I am faster now with a straight than with a safety/SE/injector razor.

This is how I shave as well, but I use a bit more time on the shaving itself. I spend a few minutes on thouchups as well to get BBS all over. I use the Straight probably 4 out of 7 days. If I don`t have the time I use my DE instead. So close to 30 minutes for me when shaving with a Straight from start to finish.

I remember when I started it took me about an hour from start to finish, now it takes 10 15 minutes. Strop > Shower > lather > shave > clean up > strop.

I also went from shaving in the morning to shaving in the evening. When I was using the mach3s, I had to shaving in the morning because within 8 hours teh 5 oclock shadow would creep in. With a straight I can shave in the evening, and by morning 12 hours later I am still BBS.

This is so true about the multi-blade.

I give myself 30 min.
It usually is not that long but the wife and kids know that I am unavailable for those 30 mins. I am one of the few odd balls that shaves before I shower.

I can get a DFS in about 20 min. Since the job ended, I like to take an hour & work technique. 'Working a scooping stroke (like coupe de maitre on the 'stache) on the concave surface just below jawline.

Depending on the day, 15-25 minutes. Used to be 45-60......... I like to take my time and enjoy. Plus, taking it slow only adds ten minutes to a completely utilitarian shave, so 99% of the time its totally worth it. Rushed it once, and will never do that again (ouch!)

+1 on evening shaves. I'm a zombie first thing in the morning, and with a straight the next day is still better than a cartridge!

When I first started it was pretty solid at 35mins for three passes, now it's about 20min max for a bbs shave or under 10 for a single pass

I can't really tell...

I usually know roughly what time it is when I walk in the bathroom, and take a glance at a clock when I come out.

For a shower, shave & cleanup, it can vary from 25 minutes to 1 hour.

Always 35 - 45 minutes; I shave after work, and it is a bit of 'me' time, so that I can relax and chill out from the misery of the day :)

So I allocate myself a maximum of 45 minutes for 'shave therapy', and try to use as much of that time as possible !

10-15 minute realm myself, seems if I take my time I end up with a great shave in 10-15 minutes, if I rush it takes me 10-15 minutes... WTH??? Ya weird but I figure if I have to rush I'll just shave the next day...

Depends on working days or weekend days.

On a working day, I set my alarm 15 minutes before the others have to get up. I let the hot water run, and soak my brush, while I strop my razor. I do only one pass on a weekday, but I cheat a little. I shave one cheek WTG, and immediately do a little XTG shaving as well, before the skin dries out. Than on with the other cheek, then the rest. This delivers me a pretty smooth shave, with smoothness that lasts till well after noon. This takes me about 10 to 15 minutes - 20 minutes shower included.

During the weekend, i follow the same shaving method, followed by an ATG shave. I take my time for preparing and after treatments, so on a weekend day, it may take 30 minutes. With idd, as opposed to multi-bladed stuff, a smoothness that easily lasts 'till the evening.

In the early days, it took me longer, but one thing that I have learned to be quite important to the speed as well is a good sharp razor!

Start to finish is probably about 15-20 minutes but sometimes I like to really take my time and then it can be longer! Just depends on how much pre/post shave prep I do really, and how long I spend chasing those last elusive bristles.

7 to 10 minutes. If I'm in a rush, I use a familiar razor. Using a DE is not an option because I gave that to my wife a few years so it's a straight or nothing.

If I really take my time, do a good prep, etc.: Not including the shower, but including my stropping (pre & post), prep (pre & post), I can do start to finish in about 45 minutes. If i'm a bit short on time, I can do it in about 35 minutes.

I feel over the past 3 months or so of straight shaving that I have really improved in my confidence with the razor, which in turn is allowing me to move a bit quicker with the blade. I never rush myself, but when I have all the time in the world I just really take my time and focus on my technique and razor positioning. I've also noticed that if I use the scything technique, it is a bit easier to thin out the hair, so that has saved me some time as well.

From a dry start to a dry finish...about 15-20 minutes.

A full shave out of the shower including clean up is about 10-15 minutes.

With a few modifications, I take about 20-25 min. but can do it in less if pressed for time. If I oversleep I skip shaving rather than use a safety ( don't own a DE).

I don't think I"ve every taken less than 45minutes to an hour since I've started Str8 shaving. I consider it MY time, a zen thing that leaves the outside world on the other side of the bathroom door mfor a while. It ease's the PTSD that I live with daily. Absolutely part of my every day therapy!!! So don't rush it fellows, It's all part of dealing with the middle age of life and all the bagage we have collected in the last half century, most of you I'm sure will agree.

For a three pass shave, about 20 to 30 minutes. For a work day single pass shave, less than 10 minutes. Most of the time with the three pass shave is the upper lip, throat , and chin as well as checking for rough spots and smoothing them out.

20-30 minutes..I shave in the evening so that I can take my time and enjoy and relax...as stated before its me time :)

Well it takes me 45 min but that is stropping shower and shave. Never timed the actual shave though.

I don't time how long it takes me to straight shave. If I don't have time to strop correctly and use the razor correctly, I use a more safer way to shave.

Once minimal experience is gained, I don't consider a straight shave to be unsafe.

About twenty to thirty minutes. The only concession I make to time is face lathering. This time includes, walking down stairs to boil a kettle and load the coffee pot (while the Alum does its business), dressing (while the coffee brews) etc. If I shave after coffee, the jitters add a quarter of an hour on to the time, this rarely happens (weekends, sometimes). If I'm rushed, I set the alarm for earlier. My teenage daughter sometimes 'alters' my routine, but it's all good:).

Neither do I. I just don't use a straight if it means I have to rush it because I have to be somewhere.

There was a thread on this not too long ago where a guy was looking to cut down his shaving time. When I shave in the evening, I like to take my time and enjoy myself, but sometimes I shave in the morning and am just going for the simple servicable shave. Not even BBS, but a clean shave none the less.

My tricks for cutting down my time are to use shower time as beard prep, building lathering on my face instead of in a bowl (halfs lather time), using fewer but longer strokes, and using water instead of lather for my XTG pass.

This gives me a good shave in less than 10 minutes, not counting shower time. It isn't BBS, but I'm not dancing cheek to cheek at work so I don't need it.

About 6 months into straight shaving, I've gone from about 50 minutes to half that (with a much better result to boot). From the time my feet hit the floor until I am shaved, showered, teeth brushed and strapped into a suit is about 45 minutes. I'm also one of those irregulars who shaves before showering.

This habit of shave first dates to all the years when shaving poorly, the shower was saved to help stop the bleeding, sooth the rash!

Well, I guess I'm just slow, or too particular, or both. I started str8t shaving back in May this year, and even now it takes me 35-45 minutes just for lathering and shaving. But I do 2 passes (3 on my neck and chin). I don't think I could stand just doing one pass. I do shave every day. I went through a spell a couple of months ago of feeling really frustrated that I wasn't getting below 30 minutes, but I just let that go--decided to just focus on enjoying giving myself a quality shave.

I view my shower and shave as "Brian's special time," and I view the shower and shave as one act now. The whole routine takes me from 40mins-1hr all in, that is from walking into the bathroom to walking out of the bathroom, the main reason for variation in the time is how long I stand in the shower staring blankly into space. I think the actual shaving part takes about 25 mins for 2 passes, WTG & ATG and some touch up, but I have never timed myself. I'm only about a month and a half into the straight razor journey and I think I could cut the shave time in half if I didn't have to spend so much time on my chin and moustache area, but I suppose I will get better at that with time. I have recently switched to shaving in the evening since the house is more peaceful at that time, and I never rush; to me it is worth eating into my sleeping time a little if I have to, plus I think the relaxing ritual actually helps me get to sleep faster anyway.
