My wedge is cursed

Many weeks ago I finally got my Sheffield to shave nicely, then while tuning up the heel or toe I whacked it against the hone and had to breadknife out a big nick in the edge. Lots of hone wear (and, eventually, two tape layers) later I got the whole smiling edge to shave beautifully. That was last night, and while rinsing lather off the blade I whacked it against the faucet and nicked it again.

Is it safe to shave with a nicked blade?

This is the only heavy blade in my rotation, and I wonder if that's why I keep swinging it into things. Once moving, it really likes to stay moving. Does anyone else have an accident-prone razor?

I'm sorry to hear that mate. Shaving with a nicked blade can bring lots of irritation and pain.

Do not shave with a nicked blade...unless you like punishment ??:(

There's no such thing... But you could be rushing, tired, careless or distracted and that always makes for accidents.

Shaving with nicked blades is a no-no.

I had an accident once with my first-ever Dovo razor when my razor fell on the floor. This Dovo razor is one of those with white plastic scales and steel on those is a bit tougher to hone than most other razors (meaning longer time to hone).

Eventually I honed it back to a shave-ready state after a few sessions but it was a learning experience back then.

I would say my past acidents correlate with learning curve but I would also say that is not always the case - accidents do happen.

Keep your hone handy and please do not shave with a nicked razor - you might as well go back to BIC then...

My friend onimaru55 offers the perfect answer. Yes, absolutely, care must be taken every moment when holding a straight razor. No distractions.

When shaving, stropping or honing, I never take my eye off the razor. I want to know exactly where it is and where it is going.

Of course, shaving with a nicked razor is asking for more trouble.

Thanks, everybody. I have other razors, all hollows or partial wedges, and have never damaged any of them. Just the one that's hardest to hone. Go figure.

Well, I guess I won't shave with it. All but about 1/64" is reallly nice edge; what a shame. Back to the stones.

Maybe this was a subconscious act because I love honing and everything else is sharp now.

Your razor may be cursed. To remove said curse, take your blade and most precious bottle of spirits to a running body of water on a clear night with a full moon. While chanting "read the wiki, read the wiki, read the wiki" pour half the bottle over the open blade into the running water. Dry the blade and carefully put it away. Sit on the bank, drink the other half and howl and the moon.

May not work but you won't care.

Ah yes, but more importantly you forgot the part where you must sacrifice a modern Gillette cartridge razor to Lynn and the other shaving gods, as a sign of good faith that you are indeed ready to wield a wedge with a master's precision.......:rofl2::rofl2:

I had better use a bottle and a half if I have to ever make this offering. Half a bottle isn't enough to do much of anything for me. A bottle would be much more effective. :D

'Just made me cringe to read. 'Just makes me dirge for ya. I've heard of the same thing being done w/ a Williams custom (I'm sure most blades are represented sooner or later). This one was dropped on a hard tile floor.

If it happens a third time, then its a sign. Rehone into good shape and sell it,.......the sign is that you and the razor are not getting along.

As said above never take your eyes off your razor. I deal with needles or what we call sharps in the back of a moving ambulance all the time. The rule is when you have one in your hand you watch it and it only until it is in a safe place, to the extreme of the rule of saying "sharp in the air", and "sharp away", if I have a partner in back with me.

Thanks, Takedeadaim. Yours is an especially vivid example.

It's only the wedge I've done this with, and I do watch it. It's the only wedge in my collection (so far), and my theory is that its mass gives it more momentum than I'm used to managing. :confused:
