i have seen this videos before.. he does use some pretty aggressive angles at times.. some people can do that and not worry.. i can on my cheeks... not on my neck though.. i have a feeling he just has a light beard and tough skin..
also.. what's one handed about it?
as you become more experienced you can get a little more aggressive. The angles are probably very good, from the camera angle they may not look like it.
He holds the razor only in the dominant hand.
This is xman, you can pm him if you have a question.
Yes, it looked like he was shaving only with his one hand, at least in holding the razor. I have held it at a similar angle, but it was on the second pass of shaving, where the whiskers were mostly gone.
I like watcing Rasiermesser Rasur (3:49 video) of him shaving. He makes it look so easy. Is he German or Belgian?

Based on the image that does not look like a safety razor to me. Is this in the correct section?
When I responded to the thread it was in safety razors. It has since been moved. see here
First video: That's SRP member xman -- the angles usually look more aggressive on video than in real life, although you're probably right in this case about it being near-perpendicular for that spot on his chin. He's a seasoned vet and while we have guidelines for new shavers, at some point you understand how to maneuver the razor around your own face with minimal risk.
Second video: That's someone who joined SRP because of the video and his SRP nick is williheusser. There was a thread originally about his video and he hopped in and explained some things starting with this post. He's Swiss.
Danke for the move to the proper forum category, now where it belongs! *S* I enjoyed reading that link as well. Willie's Grandfather's razor!! I have several old razors, a Wadsworth & Sons, a WISS & Sons, a J.A. Henckels, and a Gold Bug made by WITTE in Germany (last made in 1930), and I am sure that they are someone else's Grandfather's razor. I only wish I had the straight razor of my Grandfather, or even my Uncle. Too many times they were discarded afterward and not much thought about it back then. I got Uncle Hemran's mug and brush, but I know they pitched the razor as they felt it was not clean to pass along someone else's razor. I have shaved with all the above older razors, and have a new Dovo 6/8 myself. The J.A. Henckels is a wonderful razor for shape, but it is slightly under 1/2" or as put here 4/8. It is a little more difficult to shave with, but I have now (2-26-11) shaved with a straight 4 times. Maybe later it won't seem too bad.
Is there a way I can tell if the J.A. Henckels is "over the hill" and not good enough to use for shaving anymore? If I posted a detailed picture can one tell from that?
Ok, Commiecat, here are some picutres I just took and put on one of my websites in thei "pictures" folder.

I thought about postin a picture my wife just took of me on my 4th shave. But, instead I'll start a new thread where I will post my picture and anyone else who wants to post a pic of themselves may do so. They did this on a couple of other forums I belong to and it was really nice to see the actual face behind the avatar. I don't look like Mark Harmon aka Leroy Jethro Gibbs. *S*
I was one hand shaving for about a year now, and I started to use my left hand too. Not so easy, but now all two sides are BBS, and not just one :) Needs a little practice thou.
both are great videos.. and very good to have in our forums.. it should be encouraged to post valuable information like this..
it helps all users.
double plus thanks. ++
That razor would definitely be serviceable and looks like it was originally about a 4/8" or so, as there's little hone wear that I can see and looks to be in great shape. As long as it has a good edge it should serve you well.
I love the antique razors. I also have an A. Witte Gold Bug that is one of my favorite shavers (some details on mine).
I looked at your Gold Bug link. Beautiful restoration. Would you want me to post a picture of mine here? The only Restoration I did was I took off the original handles, broken, and put it on another very rusted and pitted razor I got at the antique store for 7.00 for the pair. I shaved with it Saturday afternoon and pic of the shave (and me) is here: http://straightrazorpalace.com/conve...tml#post746132
I got the razor for a practice razor, and it was somewhat pitted, and rusty, along with a broken scale. So I literally dulled it down on an medium/fine grit Norton stone I use for sharpening knives. VERY dull, and I used it several times for a practice razor getting off the lather and feeling the angle, getting down my hand to eye co-ordination, trying out new ideas of things I saw on videos. Then the 1 penny "new" razor came in from an ebay snafu I bid on...and won for 1 cents, and I dulled it down and now use it in place of the Witte GOLD BUG razor. I completely flattened out the edge of the razor on the stone, so there were no frowns or smiles, and re-honed it first setting an bevel on my belt sander at 1000 grit then with later with the leather 1" x 30" German belt. I used the belt sander as there was significant erosion (pitting) along the razor edge and I needed to get to the point that I could look down that blade length with a 20X Lupe and not see a small piece out of it due to pitting. When I got to that point, I started in on the Norton stones I got from Troggie (BIG THANKS!!!) and worked up from 1000, 4000, 8000 and a Belgian Coticule slurry on my Swaty stone. No nicks along the edge. Stropped on felt canvas about 10 times and about 15 times on the leather and shaved. My face is on that link. 4th time with any straight razor as well.
I am still working on using the left hand, but it was nice to see some techniques of X-Man on how to shave with just one hand. What would someone that had lost a hand do 100 years ago?
The Gold Bug made by Witte of Germany that I shaved with the other night. I don't have any of those rivets, so I made one out of a piece of aluminum rivet (very small) and cut it down and ball peened hammered it together. The scales on the Witte GOLD BUG were broken beyond use, so I used the scales off the other razor with a big notch out of the blade. So those aren't the original scales, but off one called MULCUTO EXTRA and on the other side says MULCUTO WERKE Solingen Germany. That MULCUTO was really rusted and pitted and would never have any good edge that didn't have some notches from the pitting. $7.00 for the both of them.
Here is the Gold Bug:

WOW! I generally like a little...no make that allot more lather. Seems like he has a very sharp razor. The "fools pass" that he executes is something I have not attempted yet. Might have to give it a try
wow. how long till i can do that? watching videos like those puts be in my place. i'm happy if i can finish in under 15 minutes and i don't have any permanent scars... :)
I watch those videos and practice on my "Pakistani" 1 cent ebay (DULLED) razor. I shaved last night with the above Gold Bug (5th shave with straight), watching the way my whiskers lie on my face and have no razor burn nor nicks. I found out the neck whiskes on both sides grow up and those under my chin grow down. Chin is sort of straight out so I have no problem with it. The practice with my dull razor taking shaving cream off my face has really seemed to help. It gives me better confidence on what angle, and technique, along with better first pass directions. I had dulled the Gold Bug to use it first as a practice razor and honed it back to sharp again.
Rasiermesser
Wow...that is impressive, likely been doing it all his life too lol.:)
I don't get the high shaving angle\more experienced thing as an advanced technique we should have. That is scraping from what I can see and would be horrible treatment for the edge of a razor. The only reason I can think of him getting away with it is that the bevel angle is steeper than normal IMHO. No doubt that tougher than normal skin with lighter than normal beard would help as mentioned helps him get away with it.
The only time high angles are an evil we have to live with is IME is under the nose. Even with that move I prefer to get as much as I can with a lower angle and minimize edge damage. That is just my opinion and if anyone thinks it is fine, go for it.
I don't know guys... I've re-looked at the part 2 video again, and at time stamp 25, 29 and then ESPECIALLY at time 00:33 into the video, he has that razor edge about as close to 90 degrees to the underneath of his chin as one could imagine. Some say camera trick, but the rest of the face looks normal. I also notice the way the spine is in relation to his face and the scales part where they are, as angle. The scales will always be perpendicular to the blade, they don't change. There are some at 60 degrees, but at those time stamps, it sure looks to be pretty steep angle.
At about 00:37 to 00:39 capture

In true NCIS fashion, you found the exact photo frame that proves your point! I love it!
Yeah, from that snapshot, the angle does look pretty steep! Wouldn't a steep angle like that simply have more PULL when cutting the hair (ie scraping) more than anything else?
That's perpendicular for sure, and is indeed a scraping motion. You would likely bend the edge right over doing that with a full hollow, but with a wedge (which is what X-man is using) it may possible be different? I don't know as I have never used an extreme angle with any razor.
Perhaps X will chime in regarding his shaving technique and put this to rest....
heh, Just found this thread. I believe I answered this for the OP in a PM, but for the edification of readers, when you see my angles appearing 'off' it's usually because I'm actually angling for the part of my face just in front of or just behind where the razor is. So it may look like I'm shaving with a 50º angle on my jaw line, but I'm aiming for the whiskers just above it.
Does the technique in the first video actually provide a very close shave? And is it normal to go ATG under the nose?
Just curious...cause the technique looked quite simple and quick. Very impressed
Ok, thats what I was wondering. Ok thanks for the info
but hey.....if it works why not do it
I execute a "Fool's Pass" (ATG under the nose) every day, although I, like Xman, would caution others about doing the same.
Using a full-hollow blade nearly parallel to my upper lip, I move the blade upward with a slight horizontal (slicing) motion. I only hold the razor with one hand. This scared me at first, but the resulting close shave on a portion of my face where the beard is particularly tough made it worth the risk. I'm now well practiced at it and rarely cut myself under the nose.
