SO my new Dovo Prima Silver Steel just came in. I live in atlanta where the humidity is pretty unreasonable, especially during the summer. Do you think i would need oil? I dont have any right now, but i can get some. Do i just put a little bit on the razor after each use? I will likely only shave 2 times a week or so... (My beard isnt that impressive... haha.)

If I lived there and used the razor only twice a week, I would give it a tiny bit of camelia oil or a similar product.
Apply it with a q-tip, then wipe it off with a paper tissue before use.
It only takes a few seconds and will keep your razor safe!
Plain mineral oil, the kind used as an intestinal lubricant, is available in any pharmacy and is a cheap effective lubricant. A light coating applied every time is the safest bet.
cool. does that mean apply it before i shave? or when i am finished? or both?
also, would it be a good idea to store it somewhere other than the bathroom where its less humid? or will it be ok since im using oil?
sorry for all the questions... just want to be extra safe with my new razor. dont wanna have to buy another one right now... ha.
I live in palm beach county florida if you want to talk about humidity. All i do is dry them well with toilet paper and strop them to dry up the edge. then i store them in a dry place. I have never had a razor have a problem and its like amazon humid down here.
Apply it to your razor after the shave. Make sure it is dry first!
Then, before you strop it for your next shave, wipe the oil gently off.
Yes, do store it away from the bathroom. No need to risk anything.
It is hard to always get the razor 100% covered in oin, so do store it away from the bathroom

I was told to get an olive bottle, fill the bottom with a half inch of mineral oil, add alcohol to the top, shake it and let it settle over night. Now when I finish my shave I clean the razor, strop it 5 to 10 times and then dip it into the bottle. The alcohol will absorb any water that might be on the blade and it will also act as a dispersant for the mineral oil. It is such an easy thing to do.:idea:
I've been doing a variation of that for about 8 years now. The only difference is that I don't use as much mineral oil as you do. My ratio of mineral oil to alcohol is about 1 to 200.Quote:

Otherwise I keep my razors in a relatively dry area of the house and the only ones I coat with oil are my special few that only come out once or twice a year. It is very important that the razor is dry before you put oil on it. I dry the blade with toilet paper and then run the toilet paper between the scales to get any moisture that is hiding. Then I put a drop of oil on each side of the blade and wipe it with the toilet paper. I have not had any problems with rust. I keep my razors in a wooden storage box that is lined with little packages of absorbent silica gel crystals that are used in packing and shipping.
+1 Utopian. I've been thinking of reducing the mineral oil on my next batch. Problem is, it takes so long to use what is already in the bottle.:hmmm: But I don't think drinking it would be helpful either.;)
You can get another bottle of alcohol and just add a fraction of your mix to the new alcohol. If it doesn't have enough oil, add a little more of your old mix to the new mix until you get the proportion you want.Quote:

I've also been contemplating storing the razors in their boxes with a little rice at the bottom to absorb the moisture. I can't decide if I'm being cheap or lazy.
I do that too, but in larger storage boxes, not individual razor boxes. I'm so cheap that I swap it every couple of months with fresh stuff and dump the old stuff into soup. Make sure you use brown rice. Your razors won't care, but it's better for you!Quote:

No. The 70% mix will evaporate a little more slowly than pure alcohol, but it will still help to remove residual water on your blade because alcohol and water are miscible at all ratios. In fact, 70% is the recommended dilution for use as a disinfectant specifically because of its slower rate of evaporation.

Now I'm not sure if most razors qualify as "low carbon steel", but it seems to very suitable for use in caring for a blade.
CPC is, apparently, a common ingredient in general desinfectants (e.g. for small wounds).
The ingredients to the stuff I got (Septidin) are:
Water, denatured alcohol and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC).
Now in a mix with mineral oil (I got baby oil), it seems like the perfect SR care ****tail. [Edit: I love it how the prude US content filter manages to find a drink an inappropriate term :beer2:]
But most definitely correct me if I'm wrong, since I was mostly occupied with secretly reading comics and equally secretly glancing at pretty girls during chemistry class, and therefore may not be identified as a 'reliable source' where chemistry is concerned. I am however, an expert and thus very reliable source on Belgian comics and cute girls' hineys. :nj
