Watch your fingers!!!

So there I was, shaving along and having a good ol' time... I was pretty into it, using my left hand to stretch my face and rolling along real smooth. This was the first shave that I didn't cut my face at all, and also the closest shave I've accomplished so far too. I let my concentration go for about .5 seconds, ran my middle finger right across the blade and slit it open with surgical precision! "Smooth move ex-lax!" Luckily I had some liquid bandage, so I grit my teeth and slapped some on... It beats having a band aid on your finger all day, I've heard of guys using super glue for the same thing too. Really handy stuff to have around, as it disinfects and seals the cut. Watch your fingers!

Been there, done that.

Two important things you always need to have in mind when using a straight are; always know where the razor is in relation to any part of your body and any lapse in focus or losing the big picture can be hazardous to your health. Of course now you know that.

I'm pretty sure cutting your finger(s) is a rite of passage for straight razor shavers; it;s right up there with cutting your face :w. My worst cut was on my pinky finger of all places...

BTW - "smooth move ex-lax" - haven't heard that one in years, man! Thanks for the laugh...

The few times I've found my razor hand moving toward the hand doing the skin-stretching, I had to laugh at the potential situation I was creating.

Yup. It's not unlike running material through woodworking machines: you have to watch your fingers and the blade(s). Lack of concentration can cause lack of fingers. Shaving with a straight razor is not so potentially dramatic, but it can cause some nasty cuts if you don't keep your mind and eyes on what you are doing.

good shaving, and this used to be followed by my signature which is now hidden to all. I kind of like this anonymity: I just might be that masked man, with the silver razor.

I hear ya!..a few night ago I was pretty darn tired after working out..I thought to myself "ill go for a straight shave"..why not?...I ended up nicking my left cheek somehow with the round tip..ugh I thought to myself..then I realized I will for sure make myself "fully there" when using an UN-guarded piece of steel...:banghead:

CarrieM facilitated the last run of making SRP t-shirts and hats earlier this year, but I think they sold out already. They are gray t-shirts with the SRP logo on them. If you're interested in seeing them, I think there is a thread or two in the general shaving related forum with pictures.

Focus Danielson! No worries, I'm pretty sure we've all been there and done that. God knows I love me some straights but they are a demanding mistress, one minute of distraction, hurry or over confidence and they will always let you know somehow. Hang in there. Before long it all becomes a reflex and staunching of bloodflow is a once in a blue moon process. I can't speak for everyone but for me, some of my worst and dumbest nicks and cuts happened a few seconds after the voice in my head said, "Yeah Boy! I got this!"

straight razors... paper cuts down to the bone.

I've had at least a hundred cuts from knives throughout the decades. Being a knife nut, it comes with the territory. But, I've also learned the value and cost of a sharp blade. The value is that when it cuts you, it heals faster than a dull cut, which is more of a rip. The cost is that the skin doesn't slow the blade much - once it cuts, it will keep going as long as you are pushing it.

I think we all do that at least once.

The mark of someone who's paying attention is that they only do it once and not repeatedly! :)

I read your thread yesterday and this morning, promptly cut the pinkie on my left hand on my straight razor while wiping away a little excess shaving cream. I believe it only took 1/1000 of a second for the razor to nicely slice right to the bone. Fortunately, the cut was on the top side of my finger and now sixteen hours later is healing quite nicely.

I was concentrating so hard on removing that dab of shaving cream that I forgot I was holding the razor nearby in my right hand.

Havent got the finger yet, but i have this uncanny ability to cut my left cheek with out ever noticing! basically I lift my razor, admire myself in the mirror, loose track of the razor, and turn my face right into an all too happy to be there razor. 99% of the time I dont even realize the lil girl kissed me. Then I get to my office and someone is more than happy to point it out...

i got my finger good only about 2 weeks ago, the cuts from razors seem to heal really fast though! I almost can't tell I ever did it now!

I always get the right side of my face, right on the cheek and within a 20mm radious with my square points due to a wrist I broke when I was a kid, I can't rotate it much and I obviously dig the point into my face... I actually have a cut that's healing at the moment! Lol

I really should switch hands when I use the square points buts its become a habbit now, or I could mute tthe point lol

Last year I cut my thumb down to the tendon switching hands because I was thinking too much about my technique. It took four stitches at a walk-in clinic and the doctor was laughing at me while he was sewing me up. I had to agree that it was a dumb accident but if anything I was concentrating too hard. The biggest factor in my improvement since then is that with practice, what I need to do has become more instinctive and I don't have to manage an army of thoughts while I'm shaving.
