Just curious. This guy looks like a hack job.

Nope, he looks like he knows his own face very well and knows exactly what he's doing.
I myself get more mileage out of short strokes in any given pass, but i admire his confidence. If we all should end up knowing ourselves so well.
Fast does not equal lazy, this is one of those "quick 3 passer" vids. I couldn't do this this fast because i'd end up a burnt mess, but thats down to my ability level mostly, and the fact i have wirebrush stubble and sensitive skin hinders somewhat, but mostly ability level.
Wow... That's one quick shave. He looks very comfortable doing that.
He obviously knows his face. He looks very comfortable in his routine.
That was fascinating. I kept thinking that if I tried to do that, with the quick long strokes and all, that I'd probably rip my face to tatters. There are a lot of places on my face where the stubble gets really tangly and the blade gets stuck.
Is that something that anyone can learn to do regardless of their beard type? I've found that after one pass I don't look nearly that clean-shaven. I can't get that kind of look until after 2 passes. Hmmm...
Also depends on the type of hair, growth pattern etc. He might have that magic combination of not to wiry hair, tough skin, nice straight growth pattern and experience that allows him to do that. Also remember just because it looks clean doesn't mean it feels clean ;)
I guess some background info is in order. Yes, that is me. No it is not BBS, but my co-workers don't know that. If I were going on a date, that would be my first pass, with a second identical, only XTG. I just thought I would see what you all thought, as I have not thought about technique in a long time. I just did it. I think the stroke that I get the corner of my mouth is kinda cool. That is the only stroke I have never seen anyone do before. Keep in mind, I stay in a camper when I am working out of town, and have limited water (short shower). I actually have sensitive skin and I find that long smooth strokes irritate my face less. I didn't realize that it would make it that difficult trying to shave while recording yourself. I guess I was just really bored.
Time is money, and I don't get paid to shave.
well i think you've managed to impress everyone then ;) good job. How did your skin (not the stubble) feel afterwards?
bit of advice if you'd like some, on the short stroke vs long stroke thing. I see where your coming from, but the mistake i used to make on short strokes was that i over lapped with the previous stroke and thats where the irritation started. once you get the hang of it, you find yourself picking up exactly where you left off. IMO it lets you manage the pressure used vs a long stroke as with me the pressure tended to increase the longer the stroke went on but YMMV
that guy is ripping through that shave. lol. I would look like a monster if I tried that :tameshigiri:
My skin feels fine, maybe a slight tingle of exfoliation, but no irritation. I don't know why, it just flows. It's funny how my shave evolved from learning to be perfect, to getting a perfect shave, to hurry up and hack it off.
Then if it works for you it's the right way to shave. How long you been straight shaving for, despite the post count, you def don't look like a newb
Well, welcome, glad you surfaced and great vid too!
3 things that I found interesting:
--looks like you're using about a 45 degree angle.
--No stretching for a good bit of the shave.
--And no passes with the left hand.
1) I don't really pay attention to the angle, only how it cuts. She could use a honing, and my beard wasn't very soft.
2) I typically stretch a little more than that but not a whole lot on a quick shave. I didn't think anyone would want to watch my hand stretch with the blade hidden.
3) I would hack my face to death with my left hand. That is part of the reason I didn't stretch a lot, I would have crossed my hands in front of the camera.
You can see a few places I kinda got mixed up with stroke vs. stretch hand vs. camera. It is harder than I thought.
Honestly, I just wanted to see how many people would waste 4 minutes and forty one seconds of their lives watching some dude shave.";"
What you call wasting time I call work avoidance. Semantics really. :p
(.....Time is money, and I don't get paid to shave.....)
That really says it all. The divide between those on this forum who do this because it's a past-time and those who do it just for the function of the shave period meet head on here.
If I was in a hurry or just wanted to "shave" I'd use a DE but that is the camp I'm in.
Just another breed of shaving cat.
I don't see a hack job. Looks like a fine shave to me.
I guess it quit being a past-time when I realized all these hones, strops and pastes are really unnecessary. Once I was happy with my skills with one hone and strop, I didn't have to search for the next do-dad to get a perfect shave. I guess that took the fun out of it, and it became work. The reason I started with a straight, was to not give my money away for anything disposable.
LOL... :rofl2: what a d**k! Seriously man, good job. I don't generally get off on watching other guys shave, but your video proves some valuable points:
- You're just doing what works, not stuck on a particular sequence of directions, or grip for that matter;
- You stay safe, and slow down when you need to;
- Strokes are broad and efficient - anytime I've had a shave done for me, the barber(ess) has worked with big strokes, 'cause they just don't have the time to scrape away for hours. Besides, that gets annoying for the customer...
Not to start competing here, but there are days when I shave almost as quickly as that, though I really need to be more careful and slow around my jawline and chin, otherwise things tend to get a bit bloody!
ya kudos's for being able to shave that quickly! I have a mutant growth pattern on my neck, so I have to take time and not screw up my passes or I am facing 3rd degree razor burn! some people are lucky, some are good, and a damn far few are both. Not sure which camp your in, but you definitely know what your doing razor and have it down pat for your face.
He's fine. Everyone has their own technique and learns their own face. There is a gentleman on Youtube named Thomas who lives in Denmark and does quite a lot of fine videos, very detailed, and in one he is shaving his entire head with a straight razor and no mirror and not a single nick. He relies on feedback from his fingers, and he really knows his razor(s) and their capabilities-let's face it, all razors do not give the same shave even if they are equally sharp, its the balance, the weight, the little details one has to feel before they can shave fast and flawlessly. First you may learn by the classic rules and then when you are really skilled, you can bend the rules like artists do.
Dude has skills! I'd hack my nose or ear off if I shaved that fast. Impressive.
One of the things that I have noticed in this video and in many others is the time wasted rinsing the soap from the blade. Several times it is rinsed with little soap on it. My guess is that 30 to 40% of shaving time is spent rinsing in this example.
I have a mustache and goatee so I think I am only doing the easier parts but I get the blade wet to begin with and usually rinse it only twice after that. Once after each pass.
If I am in the groove each pass is 10 strokes. Two on each cheek and 6 on my neck. Although most days it takes a few more to clean it up.
I think of it as being efficient, not lazy.
Tim
I wonder how close that shave actually is? You can hear him scraping quite a bit of stubble even at the end. No cuts though!
