Any Dads out there teaching their boys the manly art of straight razor shaving?
My oldest boy is just starting to shave and was pretty enthusiastic about learning. I will probably first get him going on the shaving part and eventually work him up to honing and maintaining a blade if he stays interested. I'm curious if folks might have some exprience or pointer on this.
Mike, I can tell you right off the bat that it's good he's starting early, while the stubble isn't all there yet. That way, he can gradually adjust his technique as he matures and the stubble gets denser. Definitely use a butter knife and a dollar store belt to get him started on stropping.
Good suggestion on the butter knife. Also, I had the same thoughts about the advantages of learning early. He's still pretty much at the peach fuzz stage so it will give him plenty of time to develope technique. Young bucks being what they are, I'm also trying to instill in him a health respect for a razor.
Several safety and technique suggestions:
1) Mention that these razors are so sharp that you can cut yourself without even feeling it. If it's deep enough he'll get a scar so he better be careful.
2) Remind him to either go straight or in a scything motion but NEVER in a slicing motion, unless he's a big fan of scars.
3) Make sure you instill the importance of stretching the skin.

My dad has straigh razor shaved before but does not anymore. So now I am giving him aa razor on of my boar brushes and shaving lessons...kinda coool that I can help him learn something.
Starting early is a good thin i think but as with all sharp things, respect and saftey are key.
Lol I wish I could do the same with my dad, but he's been growing a beard for years now and he lives across the pond anyways, so tough luck.

I can't wait till my son needs to shave he is only 12 now. He watched me shave once not too much interest but hehasn't used a disposable moch3 yet..:roflmao

My son is 18 and has a small amount of peach fuzz. I taught him how to shave straight but he says it takes to long. He is not ready for the care and prep it takes for a good shave. I know he likes it and will shave straight when he is older, but in college I would rather he did not have such things in the dorm. Sharp things and alcohol don’t mix. And even though my son doesn’t drink most of the kids do sooo.
It is weird to be the parent. It seems like yesterday I was in that dorm and now I can shave not only my face but the entire melon

I already had major comfort/burn issues at the age of 15 and my growth now at just short of 27 is nothing to write home about. About average.
If you could see my chin in the photo you would see some of the toughest beard in the world. The rest of the face is not too bad but my chin; man the hair is thick and tough. I can grow a goat in about ten minutes
My son has shown some interest in straights, but not enough to give them a go. Fortunately, he ditched his electric razor for a DE, shaving brush and better quality soaps and creams.

My son Sam is only 12 but he will try anything once. I did take the edge off somewhat though.

Great idea Gary! Get him used to it on training wheels and by the time he grows real stubble, he'll be good to go.
I've taught all 3 of my sons to shave with the straight razor. The middle one probably uses it more than the other 2. It's a gas to hear them talk about it. So far only a couple of grand daughters though. We'll have to wait and see if any boys get here for another generation.

Hey, Lynn, does the first grandson get a custom Maestro put in a safe deposit box until he's old enough to shave? Something like a straight razor trust account. :)
My sons 14 now and loves to watch me shave with a straight. He can't wait to start growing something so he can give it a go as well.
If he then continues on with it I'll get him a custom straight that he can then pass on when he has kids:D
Always pass on your stuff to your grandkids. You and your kids share much of your shaving life so you need separate gear.
LOL Keith......The grandkids definitely will have a Maestro selection. I like to give the kids stuff vs. passing it on after I'm dead. That way I can enjoy them using it. Tis the same as I have done for the boys. They know they are welcome to anything I have now.......caveat........so long as I have something to use........hahahahaha.
