Ohhhhh...Nooooooo.... or what not to do with your razor!
I've been shaving with a straight razor for about a year and a half. I followed the keen advice from the wiki and other senior members to start slow and took me about a month for full face shave. Anyway, the other day while shaving with my 7/8 TI silver steel new production razor with horn scales, I had an accident. No, didn't slice my chin, cheek or any other part of anatomy, face or otherwise - not this time anyway. I set razor down in the open position on my shave towel next to the sink, like I've been doing for a year and a half. Next think I know the razor slides off the towel (after I accidently snagged towel slightly) in slow motion and just ever so slowing slides toward the drain and very gently bumps the hard plastic drain plug. Wow, I thought - that was close, but shouldn't have done any damage - right??? Wrong! Now I've never dropped, bumped, or harmed any of my razors in anyway up until now. Upon closer inspection, there is a small spot near the toe very close to the end. How delicate is a straight razors edge you ask ?? I put it under some magnification and HOLY COW it looks like somebody took a sledge hammer to the edge. Took me quite a bit of time hitting the hones to get to out, but now back in service. You can still see slight evidence if you know just where to look. Shaving as good as ever though. Now, I don't set my razor down in the open position, but close the blade in the scales every time I put it down for any reason. Hopefully this may help others avoid an Ohhh.. Nooooooo... moment.
