I just ordered my second razor so I have something to shave with while I send off my dull one to be sharpened. I have not cut myself in a long time. My question is...am I getting better at shaving or is a dull razor a bit more forgiving than a new sharp one?
In my experiance, a dull blade leads to way more nicks and cuts than a sharp blade.

I found myself with the exact situation as yours. One would like to think we were getting better, but do not, for one second think a razor you have been using that now requires a honing will not cut the face. Yes, I do believe that we get better in all aspects as we go. But it is when we become over confident with our shaving skills, that we let our guard down and jokingly, a transfusion is now needed. The only forgiveness that I have found in a razor in need of honing is, well, I suppose I have never found mercy in a dull blade.

A razor should always be as sharp as possible. A razor off a bit can do more damage than a sharp one because you start using pressure and more strokes or maybe it starts skipping.

Before I built an excessive collection of blades, I kept one newly honed blade back as a "reference edge," so I could have that occasional reminder of how sharp a razor should be. That was helpful to my shaving learning curve. No sense trying to learn on dulled gear.
