Preference, no preference? Jimping.

No jimping, single jimping, or double jimping?

A while ago I decided to make my 7 day rotation all double-jimped razors. Even a couple of them may not shave quite as well as a few of my non-/or single jimped razors(Henckels thumb-underside jimped/Wostenholm IXL no jimping, and yes I do still substitute them into the rotation, they just aren't in my handy-dandy 7 day box). I really like the feel of having the double jimped tang on my fingers. Do you guys have any preference on what you hold? Let's say that all your razors shave equally well, what would your preference be?

I go for jimping. A jimped thumb notch is even better. My best shaver has a jimped thumb notch, and the ergonomics are part of what make it my best. Some of mine take better edges but don't manuever as well.

I like a variety. Each one has their own personality.

I love jimps and the subtle thumb notch but the biggest downfall with jimps is the oxidation. Jimps eventually turn black and are a PITA to keep clean.

you know this is something i never really have considered. i like the look of a jimpless better but i have so many of both i just reach for whos next in the rotation. i dont have any thumb notches yet, but would really like to find one. dang ebay snipers.... lol

I love double jimps when using them. I also hate them when trying to clean up an old razor. That being said, I'd rather have them than not. I've been toying with the idea of putting some on a couple of my razors that don't have them, but I don't think I have the guts or the talent to try, at least not yet.

Jimps on the edge side of the tang really seem to help with thumb-grip, I don't mind about jimps on the spine side. Pity they're so hard to keep clean.

For style points I like jimping. For function I don't really get much of a difference between jimped or smooth.

I like double jimps. Most of the razors I think I will keep for all time have double jimps. But...I don't really use them that much. So although in my head it's a matter of increased funtionality, making them more likely to stay with me forever, I never once picked up a razor with double jimps and thought, "Wow, this is so much easier than the razor I normally use."

I take every razor as it comes. I guess that means I am ambivalent in terms of jimps.

To me it all depends on the overall design of the blade.

When I have designed or have had custom razors made to my specs, I have always added jimps:)

I have to say that I rarely notice jimps while actually shaving. The exception for me are the deceptively bite-y jimps on some older Sheffield blades.

If well executed they are a thing of beauty and add alot for me,if poorly done the razor is not for me.

I don't give a hoot one way or the other.

Same here Max. I like them just as I like them on my knives but on a str8 they always become dirty/dark/black etc... For me IMHO less is more.

I like jimps though it's not a reason to turn down any razor for me. As far as keeping them clean I always thought clean jimps looked funny. They're supposed to be black in that area in my book.

I'm in the "doesn't matter" camp. If razors don't have them it isn't a deal breaker for me, though it is nice to have jimped models in the rotation. I suppose if I was in the market for a custom I'd probably order jimps....

I vastly prefer jimps. Top and bottom is better than just bottom and jimps on the bottom are better than none at all. As others have posted, I'll take them with or without. I like thumbnotches, humpback tangs, smiling blades ..... cool stuff.

Wow, I couldn't have said it any better than that! And I really like my Wosty for it's shave, but I don't like the smooth metal on the tang... Even though it feels great on the face, to me it just doesn't feel as good in my hand as the double jimped razors.

All things equal - I prefer double jimping (I can tell where my fingers are by feel). That said, I'll take a thumb notch over the jimping any day. I think they are called thumb notches...

Yes, and that's a beauty. I don't yet have a single razor with a thumb notch. I think I may have to fuel up my RAD and get one. I have been very good for the last month, haven't bought a single razor in that time. Guess it's time to go out antiquing.

Thumb notch.... lol. It's calling your name : ). I feel as though they give me a better feel. YMMV, but one should try at least one - once. Happy hunting!

+1 for jimped thumb notch! Mind you I'm a little biased as my best shaver (so far) happens to fall into that category.

But then of my top-three shavers, one has the jimped thumb notch, one is double-jimped, and one isn't jimped at all, so jimping for me is clearly only a small part of the equation. :)
