My take on the subject is this:
A DE is very good for a few things, such as:
1)People who don't use straights. If I can't talk someone into trying a straight, you bet I'll at least try to get him to switch to a DE. I'm sure you would do the same. A DE beats modern multi-blade/pressure oriented razors any day.
2)People who, for a given shave, don't have the time to use a straight. You could be late for work, or someone else wants the washroom and is rushing you to finish. Shaving in these incidents can cause so you have a lapse in concentration, creating opportunities for cuts.
3)People who are learning (be it anywhere from complete noob to "pretty much good" or "almost mastered the art"), and want an option for an "easier" shave on a given day, or wish to use it to finish up, etc.
