It wouldn't quit bleeding

Today when I was shaving I decided to use the left hand on the left side of my fact to get an across the grain stroke in from my ear to my mouth. As I laid the razor so carefully by my ear, my left hand shook ever so slightly (I'm right handed and when I use the left it some times will shake) and ZAP a nice one inch cut between by jawbone and neck. At first I though I may have escaped any damage since it didn't bleed :)



But then it bled, and bled, and bled. :eek: Stiptic wouldn't stop it, pressure wouldn't stop it.. (I take a half an aspirin a day to thin blood)

I took Gauze and taped it over the cut and went upstairs to the office. An hour later, I take the tape off........ still bleeding. :mad:

Replace the bandage and work another three hours







Take the tape and gauze off and its still oozing. :confused:

I spent about 10 minutes with the stiptic and pressure before it finally stopped.




Sheeeeessshhh! What would happen with a really bad cut..... I must have hit a little surfact vessel or something. For a while I looked like I'd gotten chomped by a vampire.

I probably would have snapped by then and cuterized it lol.

I suspect that the 1/2 aspirin could have been
a factor.

Start taking it after the shave - unless you cut
yourself......:rolleyes:

Ouch! I picked up some of the liquid band aid stuff. Don't know if that would have helped you or not. I have not had to use it yet.

Liquid Band-Aid is good stuff but do be aware it stings.

Didn't bother me that much and the stinging rapidly dissipates; the effect is quite comparable to pouring rubbing alcohol on the cut/wound.

Classic sells styptic powder, which should be much faster acting than the liquid styptic or the alum block. That's apparently what the old-time barbers used.

There's a barbershop documentary floating around where one barber tells the story of giving some guy a shave and the customer get startled by something and turns his head around mid-stroke, leaving a 3" long gash in his face. Apparently the barber stanched it using the styptic powder.

CA's also a great way to stop bleeding.

Do you sand between coats?

Lol no but it cures faster in contact with moisture and guess what blood's made of. That's why it's such a great bleed-stopper.

Yea but it makes that sting from styptic or the liquid band aid feel like a soothing massage by comparison.

I've done the same thing twice with my left hand...I think it's trying to kill me. I'm with Firestart on this one, cauterize :)

Styptic powder is also sold in pet stores for use when trimming nails and you cut too close to the quick (sp?).

Should be about the same price as the one ClassicShaving sells.

It's expensive. I'd rather just crush a styptic pencil into powder. That's a 5min job and should do the trick just as well.

Yes, but fire makes "eventually" become "now." And fire is man's best friend!

I take a full aspirin plus plavix. I've had some nicks that continue to ooze until the blood dries. Generally a bandage and pressure help.

The thought of it reminds me of merthiolate........ the orange torture stuff my mom used on everything.






I may shave with a str8 but deep down, I'm still that little boy!

Damm I haven't thought about that stuff in ages. Yeah my mom used that stuff too... Man it stung like fire..:D

That sounds like a lot of bleeding to me for a superficial cut and just being on a baby ASA/day. I'd get a clotting profile done to rule out any idiosyncratic reaction to the ASA. I do oral surgery on people taking Plavix and even Coumadin that clot faster than you seem to. Especially if the cut was truly superficial. Don't mean to be an alarmist but we had a local guy (not one of my patients) develop a serious (life-threatening) bleeding problem while on an 81mg/day dose of ASA. That was just the way his particular biochemistry worked. It would be very easy and relatively inexpensive to have a clotting profile done to rule out any physiological overreaction to the ASA. Talk to your family MD about this. Chances are your clotting is just in the extreme normal range but no use taking any risks. JMHO.

I agree with straightman on this. Make an appointment with your Primary MD, or your cardiologist and bring this up. You may not like what they tell you though. I think they will advise you to start using an electric to shave.

Things are OK now. What I found out was this. I was taking an aspirin daily along with glucosamine. I read the glucosamine bottle and it stated that you should converse with a physician if you are taking a blood thinner like aspirin.

Turns out that glucosamine also thins the blood. So, i was taking a double dose along with being a little sensitive to the effects of aspirin.

I've switched to every other day with aspirin and have had no problems since.

Ive never really had that kind of problem before, and I take 325mg everyday with a beta blocker. But my problem is that my blood is so thick it almost cougulates the instance i nick myself or get a small abrasion. The only time the bleeding wouldnt stop for me is when the doctor put me on a diuretic on top of everything else.
