9/8 W. Greaves & sons.
Well did I get a nice surprise in the mail today. I won an auction on Ebay 2 sundays ago, for what was listed as, approximately 1" wide blade, W.Greaves & sons razor. When it showed up in the mail today and I measured it, what I saw was a huge surprise.
1 1/8" !!!!! :dropjaw: :dropjaw::y:y:beer2::beer2:
The price I paid, IMO, is cheap. Original scales, original domed washers, barely any rust, and blade straight as an arrow!! The nicest thing is there's no rust at all in the pivot. There is a wee crack in the scales down by the wedge, but nothing major.
Of course, now all my other "projects" will get put on the back burner, obviously, until this suckers cuttin hairs. Here's the pics of this beast!!

Oh man, that's a beaut! I saw it too and am very happy to see it found a good home.

Sweet looking razor! Should clean up easy, it will be nice to see it done post pics.

It's having a nice bath in neatsfoot oil as we speak. :).

I think a LOT of us were watching that one. While I would love a large Greaves, I couldn't justify jacking up the price on it without going all out to win so I took a pass in hopes one of you guys would give it a good home, and not have to sell your kidney to do it.
Next time, Gadget, Next Time!

Very nice! Yup I was one watching it as well. Already have a few Greaves awaiting attention so I couldn't justify going for it - but it sure is nice!

Man I must be losing it.:jedi:

Hahahaha - glad it went to you HW!!!
That's a fantastic blade that you'll definitely enjoy...it's funny, the reaction I've got showing people 5/8 and 6/8 blades, like a nice TI with goldwash is, they can see the beauty of the blade, but it still causes some fear.
Show them a big blade like that, and it strikes terror into their hearts! "You're not actually going to shave with that thing are you!!!!" Even though it's only the edge thats the business end.
So, two things, 1) what are you going to name that monster, and 2) what are your plans for putting it back into action?
Great blade, congratulations!!!!!

hhhhmmmm.... a name....:hmmm:
How about little Greavsie. :)
As for what I did with little Greavsie, Not much. I like to try and keep my razors as original as possible, when I can. So all I did was soaked it in neatsfoot oil over night, polished the blade with flitz as well as the domed washers, and hit the wedge with some 2000 grit w/d sandpaper. Tightened the pins, honed in a coticule edge and done!
Loving this blade a lot, that's for sure.

As a Winnipegger, it would be remiss of me not to suggest "Danny" in honour of Daniel Greaves of The Watchmen. "Drivin' in style with a smile on..."
That's a fine looking blade! And I love how it has been left as original as possible. Patina lovers of the world unite... :)
