F.R. Wellman in horn and Weiss & Son in tortoiseshell

My two finds of the week - an F.R. Wellman Goldene Medaille (Hamburg) in horn, and a Weiss & Son (62 Strand) in tortoiseshell. Both polished up quite nicely with a sand and polish - still a few final touches to go before they're ready to be honed, but glad I opted to keep the same scales. Might wait for some more experience with the hone before attempting to hone the Weiss wedge/near wedge, which has a lovely shape to it!

The scales of the second are just lovely...

Don't know if I've ever seen such pressed tortoise shell.

This Wiess is priceless, very rare exemple of pressed toroise shell !

Don't do some mistake with it ! It's quite a museum item !

Indeed that Weiss & Son is quite the razor,never mind the extremely rare pressed scales the blade is quite stylish for its time frame(1841-1885) going by the stamped name (& Sons) and the address (62 Strand).

Awesomely, Mr. Weiss was also something of a character. He shared the 1800's morbid terror of being buried alive, but being a surgical instrument maker, he *did* something about it.

He invented a coffin with a device in it that he could trigger that would instantly kill him by piercing his heart with a thin needle.

They buried him in that coffin, too, but it required special permits, which he was able to get.

The company is still around and makes instruments for ophthalmology.

The Weiss is exactly what I look for in a razor personally. Nice find.

Thanks for the additional info on Mr Weiss, both martin and voidmonster - he must have been quite a character indeed! The razor is absolutely stunning and I didn't hesitate to pick it up despite the chipped scales at the back end. Is a real pity but fortunately at least doesn't affect the pinning.
