My grandads stuff. Vintage I guess.

Hey all, I know little to nothing about shaving. Especially straight shaving. Was hoping you could tell me a bit about my grandads stuff I found buried in the loft. I found his shaving stuff also, in what looks to be a salt shaker... He had more stuff but I have not found it yet. I am not old enough for proper facial hair so I have no use for all this yet. I hope to one day.

Very nice family find. Keep it in good shape till you can use it. And read and watch all you can on SRP in preparation of shaving time. Glad to have you aboard.

You my young friend have a very nice razor! A Gotta! I've shaved with one and I loved the shave!!

Hang onto it until you start to need it then have it honed by a Pro! I have a favorite!!

DO NOT TRY TO CLEAN IT UP AT ALL!!! That Gold Wash is delicate!! Do your grandfather a favor and treat it well and when the time comes to use it, use it!

He'll be proud of you!! :tu

Also if the strop is still soft and supple it should be just fine!

Thanks alot. I will just keep it all safe for the time being. I wont touch it , the razors blade itself has no faults and is in good condition. I wont clean it or attempt anything with it until I am confident I wont wreck it. Ill take it to a professional.. I am lucky enough to live in london, and I know an old fashioned shaving shop so I am sure they would be able to help. The strop is in good condition , it has several nicks right near the bottom , and it is stamped 'horse hide' and 'super fine' ... its relatively soft. I understand you can wreck one if you cant strop properly so when I get older I will make sure I'll use a different one to practice on. As for the razor could you tell me anything else about it other then it is made in germany? Thanks for the good reply.

Thats a fine looking razor,the condition looks very nice as well. That said the trademark "GOTTA" belongs to
Grah & Plumacher from Solingen Germany.
It was first registered from the trademark office in 1924, so your razor is probably from around 1930 give or take a few. As far as the strop im not sure but it could be from Astra the maker of double edge blades perhaps russian if i remember correctly.

Family razors are great. I started when I was very young with my great grandfathers razor. I wish that I had not caved to peer pressure and stopped using it for many years. I'm back with it now and sticking to it. I wish you well in your entry into straight razor shaving. It's a nice razor and should last you the rest of your life.

That is a beautiful razor and the strop looks to be in perfect shape! I wish I had family heirlooms like that!

I sadly cannot, I never got to meet my grandfather as he passed away before I was even born. Sad, but I am sure he was a good man.

Personally I'd say he was a Great Man! Look at the genes he passed onto you! Seems like a nice payback to learn The Ancient Art of Shaving With a Straight Razor that he once practiced! :tu
