So my buddy Val over at The Gentleman's Den came through for me again. Just received this monster piece of Sheffield steel. By far the thickest and heaviest razor I have thus far. Its a 13/16 Celebrated Hollow Ground Wade & Butcher with Black Mother of Pearl scales, toxic green kirinite wedge, and custom silver hardware. The pictures do absolutely no justice on how beautiful this razor really is.

Beautiful! I didn't even know there was such a thing as black mother of pearl but it all comes together nicely!
I just picked up that exact W&B blade last week and am working on a restoration project now - time to choose the material for the scales...
USAknifemaker has this material with so many great color combinations. I absolutely love it. It looks so much better in person. These pictures are rather disappointing to me.

This is my first razor from him since he started using the Escher stone. The edge looks amazing. I look forward to using it tonight. Will definitely keep you guys posted on the results

Man, I've never really desired to go to Canada up until recently. I would love to be able to have a cup of coffee with the two of you. All the information I could absorb would be amazing. Any way you guys would consider vacationing here in Los Angeles.

It shaves amazingly. Had to be very mindful of the pressure i put because the blade is as heavy as it is I found myself having too much pressure on the blade. Caught myself doing it very early in the shave and came out with a great result. Loved it.
Very nice blade, I love it. :rock:
Looks nice. It seems that the weight will do half the shaving form you.

Still in progress I'm afraid (having only just got around to it this weekend). Here are some pictures of the work in progress - from raw bone (naturally cleaned and sun bleached for a few weeks) to blanks to shaped and thinned scales. So the shape of the scales has come along nicely and I have fashioned a copper-lined horn spacer. All still needing some more fine work but have come to you good sirs for opinions... Based on these photos (bone, copper, dark horn) would you pin in steel or bronze?

I'm leaning towards steel because I feel that copper and bronze clash, visually speaking, but now that I think about copper and steel making contact I'm thinking brass might be a better option with regards corrosion? :confused:
Yes, I could see the steel working better, the copper or the bronze could definitely clash, but you never know, if it was a muted down copper or brass rather than shiny, it might work well? But the steel will definitely work.Quote:

Thanks Dexter, that's a bronze microfastener and the colour combination is growing on me. I'm also in two minds whether to stain the bone darker using a natural dye I used on this pair (again bone, fashioned for a Bruno blade I'm working on):

In the end I chose the stainless steel pins, and to keep the natural bone. It's a lovely rich colour anyway. Very happy with the end result- will take better lit (not cellphone) pictures soon and post in a separate thread but here are the results to close off the above discussion. Thanks all.

The pins match the blade the wedge matches the bone. It all blends color nice.
