Did a "swap" today at an old haunt ...traded a Belknap/Blugrass Skinner in sheath for this very interesting "Superior Steel Blade" No.6 England Knife...also picked up a Nice Old Lauterjung & Co. Bartender's Knife I will add pics of it after my camers gets a bit more juice in it... Zak Jarvis...what do you know about this Old No.6 knife? No maker's mark on first glance. Nice brass bolster...also intricate brass bale on the other end...
You might look very closely around the hinge and inside the scales. I suspect you'll find some dried blood.
It's an old surgeon's tool (I don't know the name, but it's not precisely a scalpel, definitely isn't a bistoury (though they often had similar scales), and really isn't a fleam.

From Smith's Key, 1815. You've got something very much like #30.
#22 is a folding pocket scalpel, #29 is a fleam, #28 is a bistoury, and #23 is a lancet... You managed to get exactly the one I don't know!
Very Interesting Zak...Obviously since England stamped it is post 1891...what would you guess...early to mid 1890's?
Well, the handle looks like, but I'm not sure the open and close system would fit a surgeon tool, nor the blade :confused:

Knifes are quite close of straights, aren't they ? :)
Edit : I explain myself : surgeon tools often have "scales" with an empty space between the two scales, because the edge is as fragile as a straight's.
Knifes however mainly have a closed, full, handle, with an arises (?) blocking the blade.

Yeah, almost certainly 1890's or early 1900. However, I'm not 100% convinced that blade is original to those scales. What's that locking mechanism look like?Quote:

Interestingly, I have a razor with fully closed scales, very much like a pocket knife, and it's definitely a razor. The thread about it is here. Just like you say, my Charriere pocket scalpel has an open back, like a razor (though the tortoise scales are silver lined).
When I get a chance, I'll dig up my encyclopedia of medical instruments and see if I can find a similar blade. It'll be a few days though.
Hoosiers knife looks like, a knife. Old lock back. The steel/nickel silver pin through the bolster was and still is a German style of pinning up a pocket knife. Knife might have been re-pinned at some point in time. I'm somewhat inclined to think that is the case as the pin appears to sit proud of the bolsters. Not familiar with the stamp, but you might check over at britishblades.com. Those lads are up to snuff on English cutlery.Quote:

jimmy I just love old useful things! that Simmons Hardware piece is superb! My knife guy has a wonderful shop down here in Florida and I left behind a Rogers Cutlers to her Majesty Tortoise pen knife he wanted 45 bucks for...may have to snag it down the road. he shows me many of his fine oldies when I come in which has been several times over the past 7 years

These old knives particularly the ones with blades and tools that are not Giant and make for noble EDC candidates are really of primary interest to me. I enjoy seeing what Jimmy and Wullie have posted. I believe the scales on my bartender knife is in fact horn rather than tortoise, a good quality horn but horn nonetheless.
I carry a Challenge Cutlery "tear drop" jack with ebony scales every day. I too like the oldies. I'm down to around 100 or so of various configurations, but the old spear blades and straight pulls really wind my watch.
Here's an interesting old piece of history. It's a rope knife made by Miller Brothers, Meriden, Conn.

It came in with a lot of razors that I bought. It was advertised as a razor and I bought the lot because of the knife. Got three good razors and this thing for about a quarter of what the knives alone usually sell for. I've wanted one for a long time, but was too cheap to pay the going rate.
It has no point by design. Admiralty law before and after the turn of the 20th century forbade sailors from carrying a knife with a point. It's a monster of a blade. It's almost a 1/4" thick at the spine. Reason being is that it was made to be able to be driven through a manilla line with a belaying pin.

Made by Chris Wolf who later became the manager of Schatt & Morgan in the 20's. These things were strictly utilitarian. Oak, scales, iron bolsters, and no nail nick and delightfully crude. The spring in the damn thing would probably suffice for a small car. It will take a finger off if you get one it when it's closing. Sear & Roebuck sold 'em in the teens for 25 cents.

No, there were a pining issue, the blade wasn't stable enough, so I un-pin it, then I re-pin it like a straight :)

I think the inlay (in mosaic) represent a violet, a flower that was traditionally used as a sign of recognition of Bonapartists in the Empire.
There is also an endemic specie of violet near Rouen called "Pensée de Rouen"
The knife is smaller than what I'm used to, but very efficient blade, and I'm quite fond of it :)
WOW, it's even prettier than I thought. That scales are works of art.
The "milled" liners are a nice touch as well.
Interesting about the violet and the Bonapartists. That would date the knife to the early 1800's?
It is a beautiful piece of history and the cutler's art.
My initial reaction to to first razor in this thread was that it resembled vintage " gentlemens' pocket knives", similar to those French Lagouile pocket knives still sold today.
I don't exactly know... I'd say between 1820 and 1850 :shrug:
The blade is short, but it's still efficient enough to cut dry meat and fruits. :)

It has the Laguiole "bee". IIRC Laguiole is a region rather than a maker.
Laguiole is a small village .
This one was made in Thiers not in Laguiole, but G. David is a good mark ;)

BUT - still no makers name. Then I thought about the "no. 6. England' mark and thought of No.6 Norfolk Street, Sheffield. The two maltese crosses on the knife above weren't exactly right, but after adjusting the search I came up with this:

A Joseph Rodgers model with all the marks you would expect. 'Two asterisks' is said to be on the reverse (no photo, though) so was this really an asterisk (ie 'star') and maltese cross of JR, or really two asterisks? Would be in keeping with the one with two maltese crosses, or might signify a knock-off or counterfeit of some kind, especially as Sheffield is not mentioned, nor one of the variants of cutlers to his/her/their majesties. Pity the dating in the ad is way off...

The problem with that knife can be seen in the first pic, the spring is slightly wider than the tang. I have a Joseph Rodgers with the same issue. Repining won't cure the ailment. Lovely old piece though. ......... :chapeauQuote:

Now with a proper pining, the blade is much more stable !
Jimmy, I think it looks that way because the blade has shifted due to either the old pin being worn or bent. It's not uncommon for a spring to bell out where the blade contacts it upon opening in some older knives as the blade steel is harder than the spring steel. That can also push the liners apart. ;)Quote:

I did find an old warrior for a decent price the other day though.
KA-BAR folding hunter with the dogs head shield and "match striker" pull. 1930's or 1940's I figure. Old knife has a pretty full blade yet, snaps good and just a small bit of blade wiggle. It's big hand full of knife.
