Gillette red tip
Found these in a consignment shop today. My question before I get too crazy as far as clean-up goes is; how sensitive is that red pigment? I've been using mainly scrubbing bubbles, WD-40, a toothbrush and some 0000 steel wool on occasion. Plan on trying a brass brush for the knurling on some of my safety's. I would of course not use it on the red.

I just finished a red tip this weekend. The color seemed to hold up well for what I used. I soaked in hot soapy water for an hr or so. Then toothbrushed with soap water. Cleaned with never dull wadding till it stopped turning black. rinsed an polished with mothers mag polish. Heres the end result. Attachment 166905Attachment 166906Attachment 166907

Thanks ted. Im pretty pleased with it. It was in great shape to start with. But Ive used that same cleaning process many times an it always works well. Especially on the old gillettes

I would stick with the treatment that RollinCoal used & stay away from any wire brush.

I also would add that I have found in restoring DE's that I don't "need" power tools such as a dremel. It is a bit more work an elbow grease but the chances of rubbing paint or finish off is far less an you can control how much you remove. This is very important with the "gold" techs. Real easy to go to far an then its over. Cant put finish back on. Good luck an make sure to show some pics when your done. I love those old gillettes.
