I Finally Hit the Jackpot on My Otto Deutsch Hans

I've been wanting a nice Hans since I started straight shaving, but never thought I'd stumble on a deal this good! I saw this 9/16" spike point on the Bay, for a very good BIN price, but the seller also set it up for a best offer. I messaged him with a low offer that I didn't think he'd go for, but he accepted. With only two not very revealing pics, I was taking a chance, but the seller said it had never been used, so I took a chance. Here is what I got!

As you can see, it's virtually NOS in the box. I very lightly buffed it on an aluminum oxide wheel, then Fabuluster on loose muslin, and it's like new: bolsters, pins, and silver trademark all near perfect; the blade shows no signs of honing that I can see, with original grind marks intact and no signs of previous polishing or restoration attempts, and a nice, pointy spike! No cell-rot, and just a few faint water-marks keep it from being perfect. All in all, I'm a happy camper, and can't wait to hone it up for a shave! Thanks for looking-Aaron

Phrank-I have yet to do an SOTD, but this blade would make an excellent 1st entry! And Dzandza-Yeah, I got very lucky, but I watched, passed on, or got outbid on many lesser examples. I look forward to seeing yours when you get it. Patience paid off!

Time to do a SOTD!!!

Good looking razor, if it is anything like the three I have you will be pleasantly surprised. They hone up well, feel natural in the hand, very maneuverable on the face and shave like a dream. I feel bad having three and there are so many of you out there in desperate need.:w

I might use a full hollow more often if I had one that looked as sweet as that one does.

This thread got my juices flowing and I just had to shave with one of my OD's today, excellent shave.

Great find! Keep it in a nice environment. A lot of them have succumbed to cell-rot. I believe they can be somewhat preserved.

Anyhoo, I just honed it up through Naniwa 12k, stropped it up about 150 good laps on my English Bridle, and hope to test-shave it tomorrow. Easiest honing razor I ever put to stones (but then, most of my others are smiling Sheffield wedges, most of which came with "issues"). This one still had the factory edge on it (though it was a little crumbly/oxidized).

I hadn't shaved with this particular one in a while so all I did was touch it up on the 8K and stopped it on canvas 100x and 50 on the leather, fine shave.:hmmm:

Issues start at the bevel. Clean and slather the scales with 3M wet type silicone and let soak for a few days. Wipe off gently.
The green will really pop! Leave the blade open as storing, if possible! Not being negative, just take all the precautions!

Good advice. I leave mine open and in a container with rice in it to keep moisture away. I also store them in a cool cabinet away from any UV light and condensation.

And...............keep it lubed with Tuf Glide. It's a lube that turns into a dry lube. Gun Cleaning, Knife Care, Gun Care, Lubrication & Corrosion Protection, Rust Stopper, Oil-Free, Sentry Solutions. The Navy Seals even use this lube!

I store mine dry because cell rot can be triggered by any number of things. I dry it after use and let it air out with the blade open, then I put it into an open container with rice and store it in a cool cabinet out of direct light and moisture.

Ok, I'll agree with guitstik. Something like that can be triggered by any number of things & just because the Navy Seals use it doesn't do any justice that it would be a good thing to use on a vulnerable razor like that one.

Engine46-I have handled and used a couple of Seal knives. They certainly fancy heavy duty, rugged blades that can take abuse. I can just picture one of them using a delicate hollow ground blade to sever a power cable during a night raid lol! (Having said that, I'm sure they take meticulous care of the tools they trust their lives with, so thanks again for the advice).

I use Tuff-glide on all my blades. You put it on, wipe it off. Microbonding, they say. Dry lube. However it works, it just does. It stays and protects the metal. I have not seen any ill effects of it on any material. Celluloid included! YMMV

I love the stuff! I'm sold on it. If the Navy Seals use it, it has to be good. It does dry up after awhile & I think it works better once it does dry up. Thanks for your reply!
