Cased Gillette #58

Got this one at a Sally auction today. The only drawback was that it came paired with an old Waltham men's watch and 2 cuff link sets. Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. If you scroll down in this link Gillette Rocket, the refined DE. | TheShaveDen the poster explains better than I can about the set. I did give it a quick clean up. It appears to be in decent shape.

Indisputably one of the finest DE shavers Gillette, or anyone else ever made. I've got one too and it is a pleasure to shave with. The weight, balance and aggressiveness are like Goldilocks wanted her porridge, just right. :tu

I had just last week finished reading up on Gillette DEs and remember thinking a #58 or an Aristocrat would be nice to play with. Made my rounds last week and spotted this at one of our local Sally's live auction display. Had to wait a week till today for the actual live auction. Almost like it was meant to be. Definitely looking forward to having a shave with it.

Just shaved with this sucker and all I can say is that this is the absolute smoothest shaving DE that I have ever used in my life bar none. The only way the shave could have been smoother would have been with the blade removed. No real hint of aggressiveness either so we will see how long the shave lasts today. Still shaking my head over this one.

Mine is a little too mild for me. Feels nice and smooth but just doesn't shave close enough. Is the handle on yours aluminum or brass?

Yes, it is milder than my Fat Boy @9 or Muhle R41 both with feather blades and does not shave quite as close as those do. The closeness is not that far off but it is a far smoother more carefree shave. No doubt a more aggressive razor will shave closer but you give something up to get it.

I really don't know if the handle is brass or aluminum.

OK, just did some checking on the web and from what I have read the handle on mine is brass. It has stamped in the blade tray Brit.Pat.694093. That info from here http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthr...um-Gillette-58 .

I see. Mine has the aluminum handle and it's very mild. I would compare it to a Tech or a Blue Tip SS. I suspect that the all brass version would be more aggressive. Beautiful razor either way.

Thanks. I was really surprised that it does shave as close as it does because it looks like a it has the same head as a Tech or SS. I have some of the Techs and SSs and they seem milder and not as close shaving as the 58. The other models of Gillette that will give really close shaves are some of the OC ones which can be on par with with a Fat Boy @9 or a Muhle R41. Love the OCs too.
