Tally HO and a Wade & Butcher

Hi everyone, just picked up a couple of razors, don't have any info on them besides what they are, any help would be greatly appreciated. One is a Tally HO, 14/16 or 15/16, not sure, big blade for sure though. and the other is a Wade & Butcher 13/16. The Tally has some etching on the blade that is fairly faint, not sure if worn with age or somebody sanded it, can be faintly seen in pic 4, says New York Crystal at the top, can't make out the rest and under it is a building like a state capitol or something.

You are correct, thank you. The Tally has New York Crystal Palace on it with an etching of the building.

I think I have shown this one long ago but at first I thought Tom was referring to this one. I still need either some old scales for it or to make some new ones. It says, "In For the Prize At The Exhibition 1853" along with the fox &"Tally Ho".

Nice, looks like the blade is about the same size as mine. At least the etching is highly visible and looks great.

Nice, so, are they just collectible or are they actually of any value? Not asking for a price, just if they are worth anything other than as just to collect. Also, update on the Wade & Butcher. Followed a video on youtube from Maggard Razors (Undream on here, thanks Brad, great video.) on how to remove a chip from the blade and it worked like a dream, faster than I would have thought too. You can see the before pic in the original post, first pic, here is after removing the chip, and this is one HEAVY blade.

The only value would be in collecting and/or shaving. As collectibles, condition is poor. As shavers, again poor. They can be made to shave and look good with some certainty, but will never be what they once were as collectibles. For instance, the etch will not ever come back. JMO

Make sure you use tape on the W&B when you hone - taking off that amount has changed the geometry and you are likely to end up with a wide bevel - the tape will help to minimise it.

I hope you were able to save the original scales and esp, the brass collars. Those are hard to come by.

You got that right Tom! The collars are slightly larger than the smaller ones. I have six Tally Ho's right here & one has home made wooden scales on it & I have some older horn scales for that one but could use the slightly larger brass collars so I thought about hammering some flatter. That one has the best looking blade too! I have a seventh one here somewhere that I had the blade reground & has some custom scales I made for it. It's here on the site! I also made some different scales for it as you see they are more darker. That one is older, it didn't have the fox on it.

I still have 3 of the original collars, and the scales were totally shot, one end was broken so they weren't even together.

Hang onto them. You never know when you will need them. I keep old scales whether bug bitten or broken to use as a pattern & for patch up material to fill holes, cracks & bites sometimes. Old ones do come in handy but if you don't ever want them, pm me.

I'll hang on to them, but doubt I'll ever use them for anything besides a measurement. I don't have any power tools to make scales with, so everything I do to it is all by hand.

Sometimes that is how you have to do it. I used to used primitive tools to get the job done & still do. The main thing is to have a good outcome on the scales you do make like on the F. Fenney up above!

The F. Fenney, is that the bottom one in the pic of 6 razors? And yes, it does look good. Got to looking at mine and they look like crap, I gotta fix that asap, mostly getting better material for the scales.

You might search the seller for different material but I think they quit having the micarta in that size. They used to have a selection but this is who I use.

That's a problem with a lot of people who have scale blanks. They won't be long enough which is 5.5"- 6" in most cases with straights.

I wonder if this would work for scales, they are 6"x6"x8mm thick. 8mm Brazillian Exotic Cherry Oak Laminate Flooring Sample Sample Only | eBay
