What a day! Barber shop Score!!!!

So it's about mid day today and I'm in Jersey City meeting a customer. When I park I notice an old school barber shop. I look inside and they had a little cabinet with shaving paraphernalia. Since I got there early and had time I walked in. An old guy greeted me and I inquired about some straight razors he had inside the cabinet. He took them all out to show me. Below are what I bought from him and aside from that he had a wade & butcher celebrated (in bad shape) a henkels with a frown and some others. He said he's been in that shop for 47 years!!!

I got both razors for 40 bucks!!!
I also got this 2 sided hone (God knows what this is) for 15 bucks

Philharmonic #12 Doble temple... I have always wanted one of these... Looks to be in pristine condition (no rust) but doesn't look that old.

Erik Anton Berg - Sweden - never seen one of these I thought it looked so cool. Plus I don't have anything Swedish in my collection. some pitting but nothing crazy, still shiny!

Really cool looking hone. It's double sided this side is the finisher and the other seems rough. Looks natural but who knows? I lapped it but needs a bit more laps to remove some scratches. I plan on putting this to use! would appreciate some comments or tips on this one. would love to know what kind of hone this is and if it's any good?

Great day indeed! You found yourself two great straight razors. Your razor from Sweden is going to be superb shaver and you will probably want to send it out for honing and cleanup to one of our experts. I believe your hone is a Belgian Couticule and just appears to need lapping. It is hard to tell from the picture if it is a natural or has been bonded together. You can search in our library and under our section on "hones" to start.

Sure does look like a coti to me. Better pics from different angles will help us determine. You got lucky thats for sure.

I'm telling you when I saw that and he told me 20 bucks a piece I took my money clip out faster than you can say, "whaaaaaa".
It was pretty cool chatting with the guy. I'll pay him a visit next time I'm in the area and maybe get a haircut.

That indeed looks like a Belgian Coticule. The bottom half appears to be slate and used only to give the brittle Coticule some support not for actually honing. As for the top half lap it and off you go. Truly you got a score today. I would have been happy with this hone only let alone the razors! You sir have :gl:

I'm truly turning into a collector and this shaving hobby is consuming me. My wife and I go to a lot of B&Bs and then we drive around from antique store to antique store. Now I know I need to look up some barber shops along the way. My own barber had a Filarmonica and was willing to let it go for a hundred bucks. that tells me that barber shops are the way to go. A hunting we go!
As for the stone Coti or not I'm going to use it!

What I have also learned from reading posts is that the older cotis are more favorable. Either way I'm happy as pig as crap. it's all about the hunt. I just tried the Filarmonica and it pops has already. I'm going to finish it on this stone and see what kind of shave I get. I'm going to hold off though and read up on cotis and techniques and stuff before I start honing though.

The filly looks mint and may be a factory edge. The coti may need lapping, so I would be a bit wary of trying to finish an edge on it just yet, especially the filly.

Good advice I'm in no hurry I have a coupe other razors to practice on. thanks!

Don't think that an old coti is better than a new. It's just more likely that all the old cotis that were bad got junked and thus you can't find any rarely. Of the new ones there are really good ones and really weird ones too. I have several vintage cotis and none of them are better than one of my newer ones.

I think the backside on the Coti is a Belgian blue, and while not so fast or fine as the creamy goodness, it IS a serviceable hone. If it laps a purple/red slurry, its Belgian, if its grey, its slate.

Don't know if you can see it in the picture but to me it looks like it lapped up some purple slurry.

That is up for debate. My thoughts are a 100 year or less gap in when the stones were mined wouldn't make much of a difference in a rock that took millions of years to create in the first place. It's also hard to tell if that's a BBW or slate on the back of your Citi. That is up to you to find out. It just looked like to me in the picture to be a slate backing but it could very well be a glued piece of BBW. Whatever the case it is not a natural combination stone. Play around with it when you're ready. :gl:

The first picture is a BBW beside a piece of slate used to back a coticule. Distinct colour difference. The second picture is a picture of the slurry produced on a BBW. Hope this helps.

I still think you held a gun to his his head and told him he would take $40 for the lot!

Well going off this, I'll be sure to keep my eye's pealed on old barber shops.

That's definitely a Coti!

Congats on your score. Way to keep your eyes open. Its definitely a Coti and was used by barbers for a reason. You dont have high end razors and maintain them with crap. Think about that for a minute. He got paid for giving a close shave, both razors are high quality in any informed wet shavers book. Hone follows suit.

What?! I would've gone back for it too. I've been wanting to get a coticule since it seems a lot of the experienced members use them, but I haven't found any that price range.

When I went in originally I suspected it was a cot but was't sure so I bought the bigger one. In addition he still has a frowning hecnkes, a Wade and Butcher that scales are broken in half and is about less than 3/8 and some other poor conditioned razors.
