Two Joseph Smith & Sons, Rescaled by Tarkus
Got these two beauties as blades only from a forum member a couple of years back. After they sat on the shelf for a year or more, I saw a thread Sharptonn posted where Tarkus had done a great job on a horn rescale. I reached out to Darl (Tarkus) and sent them his way.
I can't praise the work enough. Now Darl doesn't like them because, the blades being punched differently for the pivot pin, and one being a bit longer overall than the other, they don't match perfectly. I think they are great.
One of them I honed up no problem on an 11" coticule and got a killer shave. The other had a chip in the center of the bevel so it was relegated to the shelf for a couple of months, until I got the ambition to tackle it.
I started out on a DMT 600 and it just wasn't cutting it ..... pun intended ..... so I gave the Atoma 1200 a go and it was much better. Still needed quite a bit to get the chip to being just visible with a 30x eye loupe, and I went to the 1k chosera. Went on with the 1k, 3k, 5k, 10k choseras and then the suehiro 20k to finish. I'll shave with it tomorrow, but judging from the HHT it is going to be a good one.
Here are the original blades, and the finished rescaled blades. (I told Darl to leave them as is, other than the rescale) Took them 150 years to get that patina, may as well leave well enough alone. :)
