Some gigantic insanity from Paris...

Shave with it in the morning, trim the hedges in the afternoon. That thing is monstrous.

Wanna know what disgusts me? It is beautifully ground to an almost ocd level. It sits on a stone flawlessly.... Meanwhile half the sheffields I have done lately have been like red rope licorice...

Man, I don't think I even have enough face to use that!
-
I wouldn't be surprised that this one is not for human beings. Most likely for horses.

I think it was intended for showpiece purposes to be honest with you... I've seen those horse blades before and they are much more tool-like utilitarian.
-
You guys are silly, it's for shaving your back ;)

WOW! Gotta find me a showpiece like those - they are weapon sized! :medvl:

im kicking myself for not going deeper on that auction, at the end i refrained from hitting the one click bid after having $400 typed in. not sure if that wouldve topped your high mark anyway but man, kickin myself :gaah: just watched it end with my finger ready to pounce and never did........ IDIOT!
but an oversized congrats to you, its a nice piece to keep in a collection :D

You would have won... I had to temper my aggression because of the insane laws in this state... The price I got that at was a joke. One, the scales are always trashed when you find one of these french blades, and two a lot of them have damage as a result of being in said trashed scales. I know these types in much worse shape have gone for over double what I paid.. I'll send it to mycarver eventually to max it out. I need to source a fitting box. A long silver plated box would be fantastic, but probably hard to come by exactly in the size I'd like. Need to think on that one.
-
I THINK my max was $226 and change

I have no doubt the whole "natural materials" thing scared a LOT of ppl who wanted to bid off because of customs and potentially losing it....

thats definitely one of the reasons i held off. i havnt been intentionally buying anything that has ivory, esp from out of country. part of what "pre ban" means in the states before the ban
-
NY state makes you jump through so many hoops it isn't funny and it applies even to mammoth ivory. Here, even if it is pre ban, it can't make up more than 20% of the item in composition if you wish to sell it even if you have all your paperwork in order. It's crazy. There are exemptions for things like old pianos.

But how does it shave?:hmmm:
-
I'm bound to try eventually. I am thinking so long as you choke up on the tang, it will behave like a big, swooping Sheffield with sketchy balance. The thing is 11/8 and if it is typical French steel, probably capable of taking a vicious edge. Not a normal shaving experience.
