Wostenholm stubtail with unusual grind

Probably one for a pro to restore. Heel is a touch pitty, but not as much as it looks. No big deal. Really beautiful blade.

That is a wicked looking grind. Who wouldn't love to own that?

I'd try to clean it up myself. Start slow and see what happens. High higher grits. Sometimes with pitting, you can loose some of the etching.
If you don't feel comfortable about doing the work yourself, I'd send it to a pro.

I've got a sheffield that is newer in age but similar grind, it's referred to a concave grind IIRC

I was thinking that grind was a Barber's Rattler ? OTOH .......... I could be wrong, was wrong once before .... Nice blade !

It's more the blade is a salad of sharp angles. One, it is always a risk to soften them, and two, if I send it to someone like mark, he could exploit that to good visual effect with contrasts. And tweak the scales a touch. Zak said it is an early rattler 1815-20 just now in my email. I've never encountered one of these before today and I've had a stupid number of razors.

What a magnificent beast! I would hand sand that beauty only enough to clear the active rust. Such character is not to be dismissed lightly.

currently being careful with 2k sandpaper. I got blood already. First blade since a packwood ages ago to do that.

That baby looks good as it is TBH.....
Maybe some polish and hone it up!
Scales are perfect looking!

This is going on right now. brutalized the chips and cracks on 120 grit wet dry put on top of a lapped carbo as a backing. These always had spines too thin relative to height so I rolled the dice grinding 1/8 off. Bevel calculations are still within range. Bevel bevel! These are just about the most fun blades to hone as far as I'm concerned. Still mounting fine in the razor as well.

Btw, for those curious. Kind of sits on a hone like a typical hollow ground so the design is actually working well. Attachment 218806

The camera can do some funny things, as to my eyes, the edge looks like it is hooked where the bevel meets the hone. It isn't, just looks like it.
And that razor....ultra!
I turn into a kid again when I see a new (to me) grind. And that one is amazing! Beautiful razor all around.

Yep, optical illusion from the upturned toe being head on. Normal Sheffield honing rules apply, rolling x required. Wostenholm's grindings consistently impress me. Fastidious by Sheffield standards.

Apparently, half rattler is the term for this grind
