A couple acquisition's

Out running around today. Stopped at a few antique shops, and a trip to Imperial Shave, for some shave soaps, and some cologne.
But here's the finds from the antique shops.

1st. Vintage old spice mug, with a puck of vintage Williams mug in it, and a Ever- Ready brush.

2nd. A Curleys, safety razor.
And a autostrop, valley safety razor.

Can some one tell me what blade the autostrop use.
And is the blade in the curley, removable.

Looks like the auto strop would use a typical gem single edge from its shape Mike. Maybe post some opened up shots when you can.
And the guard should come off the Curley, not sure about the blade itself from the pics.

Nice finds. You'd have to do a web search but I vaguely recall reading somewhere that a GEM blade could be used if you removed the spine(?), doubled over end piece. Oth I could be entirely wrong.

That early safety razor's a good catch! I've never seen them in the wild myself.

Cool find! The Curley razor does in fact comes apart, there is different versions of this razor but i think the tail is on a hinge releasing the blade and guard.

Some places have them in stock.

That model Auto strop won't take the de-spined Gem blades. Either Feather or vintage valet blades with the cutouts will work.

I think I'd be nervous to try the "Sliding Diagonal Stroke" advertised with the Curley - just sounds like the same action I use to peel a potato or something!

This would have been my reply but you beat me to it.

One question that I haven't seen the answer to anywhere is that I "assume" It wouldn't do much good to try to strop these Feather blades because the modern blades are coated.

Am I thinking right?:shrug:

Yeah, noticed the odd cut outs/ spurs that hold the blade.
Guess it makes it pre 1912

Your right, these stropping devices were in use when blades were made out of carbon steel. Using one now would remove the coating on the edge of the blade and make it even less effective.

That Curley looks great. Overall a great haul, congratulations and enjoy.

Curley, The can take and hold a nice edge.
With the guard off the relief distance of the guard may be adjusted by rotating the end hardware before replacing it onto the razor.

I've already disassembled, cleaned it up, and got everything moving except removing the blade. Got it soaking in hoppes#9 gun bore solvent, mixed with a penetrating oil.
