New Brian Brown Razor Works Straight
I decided to get another Brian Brown Razor Works straight. This one is a 7/8 Spanish point 1/4 hollow in black horn. Brian features side cut jimps on the top and bottom of a slightly rounded tang. The combination of side jimps and a rounded tang make rolling very easy during stropping. The fit and finish throughout the razor are top notch, the horn scales are especially well done.
My first BBRW was a 7/8 square point in G10 Ghost Jade and while the scales were well done it was simply too high tech and modern. I really didn't care to see the glass weave in the Ghost Jade or the sharp bevel before the edge of the scales. That razor got rescaled in Briarwood with a Wade & Butcher type profile.
This new 7/8 Spanish point features the same scale shape of the first one, minus the angled bevel surrounding the edge of the scales. Brian simply rounded the horn to the edges of the scale profile. That small design touch, coupled with the more traditional horn made all the difference to me.
Both razors came shave ready, but were a bit too crisp and surgical for my face. I reset the bevel (Brian uses tape) took the edges up 4 & 8k on Shapton glass stones then finished on my Jnat. Both razors are outstanding shavers. For me the most surprising thing (part of the reason why I purchased another BBRW) was the fact the 1/4 hollow grind shaved like a full hollow.
