Vintage Butterscotch Simpson 107

Today I went to my wood supplier to pick up some material for a brush I will be doing, and decided to stop by an antique store in the area. Passed on a few razors, but spotted this in a cabinet and got giddy. An old Butterscotch Simpson brush in really good condition. The brown and white you see on the handle is crud, so it needs a bit of cleaning. Sticker is intact, and on nice and solid. The badger hair on the other hand has started to fall out.

I'm thinking I'm going to dish out the moolah, and somehow get Simpson Manchurian in it. I'll either try and convince them to send me a knot or send it in for them to do it. I think it would be worth it. Not sure I want a German knot in this one.

That' an oldie but when fixed up will be a real goodie.
My vote is to relax and let Simpson do the work on this one.

Slap the knot back in, tell Simpson it fell out when you were lathering, then ask if their warranties expire after 40 years!

Interesting that the label is still on it. In the post butterscotch Somerset made brushes if you didn't apply nail polish the label was gone as soon as water hit it. Not so with the Isle of Man brush handles. I'd throw one of Bernd's knots in it. The D0-1 two band can't be beat, even by a Manchurian. IMHO.

Now Jimmie, that's sacrilege! I plan on getting a D01 in the near future, and putting it a special handle. I think this one needs the appropriate knot, plus I really want to try the Manchurian.

Looks like the sticker has slid around a bit. Maybe the original owner did something to keep it on there???

IME they weren't particular about where they put the sticker. Usually partially covers the lamp black letters designating the style of brush. This Manchurian Chubby 2, made when they were still in Somerset is an example. Sold it because it was so scritchy it was too much of a good thing :hmmm:

Nice one! I know Simpsons would love to reknot that bad boy, unfortunately Mark from Simpsons has said he won't send knots out. No harm in asking though.

I've talked to Mark, and he said exactly that. They don't send out knots, but would love to re-knot the handle for me. I asked for the Manchurian hair, so it should be quite nice when I get it back.

Yeah, I had the same experience myself recently. I acquired a vintage Wee Scot with a Hoffritz branded travel tube. I inquired with Mark about getting a Wee Scot knot for it and he said he couldn't sell just the knot but if I sent the brush to him then he could get it re-knotted for me. I had also just bought a Duke 3 Manchurian in faux tortoiseshell but when I opened the box it had a faux jade handle (box was marked tortoiseshell though). I mailed both the vintage Wee Scot and the Duke 3 back and it was shockingly expensive, almost fifty bucks! But it was worth it cause I definitely like what I got back.

TC, their old butterscotch handles do show up from time to time on the Bay, but generally go for a high digits.

They did all the work for me but the whole restore did cost me a bit tho, like 60 pounds all told.

Stole this image from Simpsons Instagram page. It's been cleaned, a new knot installed and on its way back to me. Excited!

I guess the old sticker got damaged, so a new one was installed. I like the look of it anyways.

Boy that a few bucks for installing a knot and polishing. But if the knot is included in the price too... I don't know. Still a bit spendy me thinks. But what do I know. Its a Simpson. I lost the sticker on my Simpson. Think they'd sell me a sticker. ha.

What size knot and loft did you go for?

Biggest they could fit in! Which would be a 22mm. Small hole for such a big handle, but I do like smaller sized brushes. 24mm is the biggest I'd buy anymore. As for Loft, they're the experts and know those knots best, so I told him to put it at whatever he thought would be appropriate.

Just saw the photo of your refurbed brush. Man, they did a nice job. Then looking more closely at I though that it looked a bit familiar so I went and checked. Seems like I have a similar brush but the next size down, 105, having an 18mm pure badger knot. Sans sticker of course. Now I have a better idea of the make, thanks.

Wonder how many sizes there was for this model, and if it had a specific name. Cool that your hair is still in great shape. Ever think about getting a sticker for it?

Seems Simpsons traditionally runs 3 different sizes in series of brushes so maybe 3? They generally do name their brushes also. Possibly Mark at Simpsons could answer those questions.

Yes, I suppose it is unusual that the knot is still in decent shape given how long it has been kicking around. It does shed the odd hairs too but given it's age not too unexpected. I was thinking of hogging the hole out and putting in a larger Shavemac 2 band silvertip knot though. Not considered getting a new sticker either.

If anyone wants a new sticker id love to go in on one too. 1 pound for sticker, 5 pounds for shipping. So if you want one andvwant to splits costs lets me know. If we could get two or 3 in one shippment sure would help the cost. Not that its really a lot of money. I just hate to spend 5 times the amount on shipping than the cost of the item.
