Packwood restored

I picked this razor up a couple years ago.
All covered in crusty red rust, I cleaned it up to where I could live with it, and tried to hone it, to no avail. It'd been all but honed out, no thanks to the rust I presume. So I put the devil spit thing in the to do drawer till my skills had improved enough to take on the challenge to bring it back to life.

So here's what it looks like out of the drawer.

Here you can see the wonky bevel

So with the aid of a magnetic blade holder a dremmel with various sized wheels and the greaseless sharpton sent, I under cut the spine and slightly hollowed out each side of the blade while removing the devils spit and truing up the edge. So yes...refaced by dremmel.

After the full Monte with the greaseless, it was back to 600, 800, 1000, wet dry paper. Then 800 crocus paper with Cr/ox, n WD-40, a worn scotchbrite wheel in the dremmel at low speed, Cr/ox, then Maas on a rag wheel in the dremmel, followed by 3M metal restorer (blade bling) on a rag by hand.

The scales are made from Bubbinga that was sent from one of our fine members (Tuzi),
finished in True Oil.

Thanks for looking, its been a long road for this one, and did I say..Thank God for micro screws.?!! Cause I couldn't tell you how many times I had to put n take this apart, making adjustments, to get it to close in the scales. Besides the the tang keeping it off center, I had to deal with the most twisted blade I've ever seen.[emoji38]

Wow great job.. How does it shave?
That is a huge twist. Apart from thinning one of the scale ends I would consider drilling un straight pin holes to counter that ..

Shave comes this evening.
Oh....there was a bit of tweeking to the scales and pins as well as shimming the tang, but I got it handled.[emoji4]

Mike - gobsmacked, truly stellar job, razor looks awesome.

You got rid of that Devil's Spit, sheesh....blade is completely clean, gorgeous, going to go downstairs and "shame" my Palmera....show it the pic of the Packwood and tell it to pull itself together.

Scales are gorgeous as well....5 by 5 Stars Mike.....great job.

Thanks for the kind words Phrank, it was truly a lot of time and patience, let alone elbow grease, but it came out better than I'd hoped for. I had to be completely satisfied with it, none of that...well, it'll be alright like that, stuff. Just slow and steady, muzzle loader Mike style.[emoji6]

Crude it may be, but I just enjoyed a most wonderful shave from it, and has earned its place on the top shelf.

I have one yet....One day I will drag it out!

Nice work, Mike! That turned out a real treat! It was a long road but worth it, can't rush a fine restore like that. You really know how to bring out the best in the wood, the tru-oil master! And the blade, wow, you really saved it's life and now that thing just has that look where you know it's going to be a special shaver. Excellent finish on there. Hats off to a fine job very well done! Bravo! :chapeau

Mike, a couple of things are pretty incredible. The fact that you reworked that blade with a Dremel, and the final result.
I'd give that a place on my top shelf any day.
