Thread: R. Wass Jubilee Razor

I was watching this one with a good amount of curiosity when I saw it come up for sale. Thanks to ScienceGuy and Voidmonster for posting all the pictures and research and filling in some of the blanks on this gem.

Looks like Robert Wass may have succumbed to the 'criminal cutler' thing.
Reminds of the Stenton tale of the lead-lined room, river pirates and such!

I'm still digging around on this one.

The newspapers were saying that the burglar Robert Wass was a carpenter (as well as his accomplice, James Penniston). So almost certainly not the cutler... But seeing as how they were from the same town, very likely cousins.

With Wass' proclamations of being cutler to the Prince of Wales, I have to think that having a cousin with the same name splashed across the papers as 'Squeaky Wass the cross-dressing fugitive' made him decide to live a little more quietly somewhere far away.

Looks like he was born in 1771 and in 1790 married Jane Wrathall in Handsworth. The one child of theirs whose birthplace I've found was born in Sheffield, so I'm now very confident I've got the right guy here.

By 1820 they'd all moved to Middlesex, far, far away. He died late in 1851. The census for that year had a checkmark next to 'blind/deaf/dumb' for both him and his second wife, Caroline.

Well....I expect his occupation and condition were possibly of 'convenience' at any given time!

I finally found a complete Jubilee razor (Each blade stamped 5).
For now only the photos of the pre-restoration conditions

restored, sharpened and tested with complete satisfaction

That is surely something different and you should be proud to have found it and fixed it up. A nice addition to any collection.

Did you see this one? It recently went for a large sum in the UK (too much for me alas). Same era, and all the blades are marked with Swedish landmarks/cities.

That's a stunning razor, I never seem to come across razors like these.
