Just received a razor I purchased on eBay. Removed the hand made wood scales and got a nice surprise. More history on inside. Hand writing seems correct for era. I will keep them.

Very cool!
That's awesome,
I have quite a few of old razors where some previous owner engraved something in the scales: initials, dates, addresses, other things I can't figure out.
If you just take a moment to realize someone else bought this razor and shaved with it maybe almost daily and carved something in it to mark it. And you/we are holding the exact same thing he did x years ago, how cool is that?!
It's a small piece of history and was a very personal item from someone else
Lucky find! I want to see the razor that came with them!
It was a Was & Butcher. I looked up C. H. Burris. Dates matched and said he was born in Tennessee. His wife was Nannie N also from Tennessee. They had a daughter May born in 1886 in St. Louis, MO. If this info is correct would love to find a living relative.
Sorry about the tape. Getting ready to hone.

I have a 1911 Gov't produced in 1913. When I removed the grips. It had a name, date 1943 and SN etched into them. From a fellow in the USNR. Always nice to find a link to the past owner. Ken.
.
Not as exciting, But I discovered a maker's mark inside some old Wade and Butcher scales just now. Never saw one before. Probably did not look! ;)
Looks like G*R to me?

And it pleases me that you have responded, Zak!
You seem to be the authority on these scale signatures.
So more history inside of scales!
Thanks! :beer1:
I just knew they were 'pressed' as the letters are raised!
That's is really cool! I've never seen scales signed so well, and to be able to look it up and find people back in time.. that's special.
Zak I wish I had your mind! I can't remember details very well. Bravo again!
The scale pressers really fascinate me because they’re so little talked about. Almost all the information I can find about them is from directory listings that say no more than ‘this guy existed’.
One of these days I’m going to try and dig in further... Right now I’m working on on the Little Masters — by accident, thanks to connections I’ve made researching William Stenton.
