Thread: A Bit of History

Gentlemen,

My cousin and I have collaborated on a number of videos, he as videographer and editor and I as script writer and voice narrator. The video here tells a small story about the Assyrian empire thousands of years ago. Of course, that’s my heritage, and I thought I should share it with my friend here. We filmed the video in my study. The fountain pen is the Pelikan M400.

Our ancestors legacies live on today in modern society. Including the seconds,minutes and hours on our watches, most modern religions, in fact almost everything stems from Mesopotamia , the cradle of civilisation..

Right you are, Joseph. The Assyrian empire fell in 612 B.C., but we’re still around, still Assyrian. Some years ago my cousin and I had planned to visit the villages in Nineveh Plain, in norther Iraq, and record the stories told by the old men and women. Can you imagine the stories we could record? Since there was going on — I had made it out of Vietnam and wasn’t about get myself shot up in Iraq — we had to cancel plans. A missed opportunity, indeed.

My Uncle who produces "The Assyrian Observer" magazine still today at the age of 97 is full of amazing stories some of which would make great films.. However stories of Assyrian History are told to him by me and not visa versa. Assyrians were the first Christians and christianity is all they know broadly speaking..
From my early teens i had a passion for Assyrian history, leading to a lifetime of interest/research and collecting books on Assyria/Sumeria, long before the internet came about..

Recently my elder brother and i took a trip to the British Museum . For him to see some Epic of Gilgamesh tablets which tell the first stories of the Noah and the great flood and for myself to see the Burney relief . Smaller than i'd imagined thought to be Ishtar or maybe Ereshkignal, her sister..
