If it is true damascus, I’m curious what the blade etch will look like. Nice razor and scales all the same.
It isn't Damascus steel, I believe back then some razors were just labeled as such. (Marketing) Or back in the day just steel from there, rust proof maybe, sometimes labeled magnetic as well. Most likely just referred to top of the line product. It hones like regular carbon steel. However it is terrific none the less.
Very nice. I have an Ern in lesser with peacock(?) scales in a box somewhere. Lesser condition, but this may inspire me to haul it out.
Here's a shot of mine FWIW. Just hauled it out. In better shape than I recall. Should clean up nicely. Downside is that the scales are mildly warping due to a parallel, rather than tapered, spacer (spacing wedge?). Doesn't block the blade's passage, but one has to be careful in closing it up so as not to hit the edge near the toe.

That will clean up nicely. The scales on mine are doing the same thing. I just close the blade from the shoulder and it misses the scales. I just used some Maas with an old cotton diaper on the scales and made sure when I used alcohol that it stayed away from the paint job. The paint job is in much better shape than mine.
Yeah, the paint job is in pretty good shape, apart from the head of the peacock, which I suppose faded from use and solvents in lather, etc. Think I might try to steam the scales with a spacer towards the toe to see if I can get a little more room there. The warp is only noticeable when the blade is opened.
I'd be curious to know how many of the bird-scale variants Ern made back in the day.
I have seen peacocks on other makers but not any other bird types than these. Some have ladies and plant/flowers from my personal experience. Curious.
