I recently picked up this lovely old Wostenholm Pipe razor as a resto project. I reckon the razor must've been sitting in a draw unused for all these years as it has no hone wear at all. Shouldn't take much effort to tidy up. Thanks for looking. Cheers, Mick.

That will be a great razor whether you restore it or leave it with its lovely patina.
Nice find Mick. Seldom see examples like it with that little wear. Even the scales (I assume faux tortoise shell horn ) seem free from bites. Brass pins with silver/nickel colored collars is a nice touch also. Hope to see more of it in process. Should clean up nicely.
Lovely old razor. My experience is that are great shavers.

Mick, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say what I think, that is, this razor seems to me to present a case for conservation rather than restoration. It has superb patina on the blade; the pins and collars are nice and the scales pretty well preserved. Just hone it and see how it performs.
Looks like it had a regrind long ago. Someone 'refreshed' it from a worn, heavy wedge.
Look at the tang/blade transition on both sides. Differences there are not unusual to see on regrinds.
That one is plenty old!
I doubt it's a regrind unless it was just "kissed" to the wheels. You can still see remnants of the blade etch if you zoom in.

Blade face has etch. I don't think regrind, but when I get home I will post an end on pic to show the grind. Thanks fellas.

Yeah, I have to agree with Maladroit. I thinking it were me I would use some 3M or a comparable metal polish and a rag, buff that blade up, use a set of nail buffer sponges on that horn and hone that beauty up. As good as that thing is a little spit and polish would be as far as I would go...if it were me that is.
I would work hard at preserving that etch. Maybe cover it while you are doing any other work.
I have found that the 3M on a sock or other soft towel works well at cleaning up an etch without fading or removing it. It's a bit pricey but well worth the money.
Edit: for those who are not already acquainted with it, the "3M" I'm referring to is 3M Marine Metal Restorer and Polish.

It shouldn't. Not unless you scrub hard I guess. I have used it to clean etched blades and it did not remove the frosted relief. Of course I was careful and cautious to try it for that reason. I think it is best used on a clean cloth to avoid any residual you might have picked up from another blade. I use a shop towel repeatedly to clean really dirty blades and for that it works well; probably picks up grit that acts as an abrasive. I would avoid that for the etch though. Like any cleaning product advises try it on a small, inconspicuous area first.Quote:
