Lured by The Eye - latest 7-day set..

Hi Gents

Just wanted to show off my latest purchase: a seriously unused 7-day set of sheffield razors by Taylors Eye Witness - what can I say, I was so excited when the woman at the antique store pulled this from her desk drawer, "Straight razors...you mean something like this??" she said, handing me this dusty red leather box.. oh my, I just knew what was inside, but had no idea just how untouched this set was. All the razors were even keen enough to shave with, after who knows how many years.

Paid a premium price for it though, as she was not interested in bringing it down, especially after seeing a grown man get all giddy about it.. (don't you just hate how some sales people seem to thrive on dampening your good fortune, even when it's something they don't even care for..) But nonetheless it's mine now :D

I just love the Eye logo for Taylors' razors, something really 'old world' about it that gets me all excited. You can even see two labels stuck on from the cutlers who sold the set at around the early 1900's I'd say, with their street address in Cape Town. I looked up the address and it seems there's a mall of some kind there now, sad, but isn't the history of things so interesting..

Beautiful, what did you pay for it? I figure the lot of them are probably worth $350 new.

I paid $400 for them :eek: worth double that to me though, given the brand and the age and the style of the whole box (not to mention the original sellers labels still stuck to the inside of the lid)... but how rare is it finding good sets, or even just single razors these days... well at least here in SA it's like hens teeth. So I've got to grab what I can find :D

I looked the company up, they don't exist anymore unfortunately..
All the razors have ever so slight hone wear - could be from the factory, but otherwise doesnt look used at all - of course I've taken it to my throat twice and they are really nice blades, I'm gonna still clean up the box and lightly hand sand the blades to remove all the minor blemishes.. right after I clean up the 7-day set of Joseph Rodgers thats staring at me on the workbench....

The bad thing is that you are done with razor buying now... you have more than enough razors for this lifetime to shave with..

Beautiful set and Taylor's made a darn good razor. Made some good pocket knives too. AFAIC that was a good deal. Not a high price for what you have there. :tu

The "Ready For Use" stickers that the Cutlery works put on the inside of the box makes me think that they did some touch up honing on those razors prior to selling them. I bet that's why you're seeing a touch of honing wear.

These look related or really close maybe a sheffield thing for the time. Top of shanke is Identical too.

Taylor Eye Witness also has the advantage of being one of the cooler names for a straight razor - all business. I've wanted one just for the name and the eye, so cool.

Thats the only thing, I so wish this had the key, it's so complete and then no key :mad: I asked her and she said there was no key for it, so the poor guy is probably sitting in a dusty drawer in an abandonded house somewhere....

I don't think it was a matter of her knowing its value or in fact knowing anything about razors, its just that everything in her shop is on the pricey side.. I guess I was hoping to find something shaving related and that she'd just sell them cheap, but, alas she had them marked quite high and didn't want to budge. But like I said, I feel this set could go for $800 and still be a reasonable buy, thats just over $100 a razor and a box for free.... so I'm very happy :D

Jasper, awesome pickup dude. I love that eye man. and the fact that it's in South Africa, I like to imagine some traveler bought it to take on Safari, then left it behind. cool stuff man. too bad she wasn't in a dealing mood.

Vashaver I think there must be a time period or other familiarity. I have two razors from a Clement 7 day set and they look very similar. I think though that yours look most like this :) (1 of 7 day set)

That is a nice blade there. You can tell with the 7 day set that most of his shaving was done mid-week. How neat is that! Poor guy!

Yes mine too is a SHAVEESI and maybe some of the hardest steel I have had. Mine has a short tang but the blade looked almost NOS. The grind all thrue the tange looks nearly the same as his.....intersting anyway. There heavy blades too!

Mine have really long tangs, the longest I have had on any of my razors. feel great in my big hands but haven't had any sharpened yet. Mine all appear to have seen very very little hone wear, but for some reason one blade is almost about 3/32 smaller than the others although marked exactly the same.

That's a top quality Sheffield razor. Taylors are still going strong and they are in Sheffield England. They still use the Taylor's Eye logo on some of their better quality kitchen knives.

My razor hones up so sharp and smooth, I sometimes find it to be too sharp.

You got a great bargain so enjoy. You really might as well stop collecting now because they don't come much better than that.
