A really pretty Solingen?

I really do have to slow down now. I may well have the beginnings of a collection. Now I have to learn to shave, as soon as I find a honemeister in my area.

Today I went out and found a good old strop. "Genuine Russian Tannage" #995 with a "Silk Finish" #450 linen back. I'm well pleased.

Got an old Wosty in a box that seems to have a good edge and spine.

Then I found this boxed Solingen beauty that shows no wear at all. Does any one know the mark on the blade. It's an anchor with two crossed swords. The tang reads HERMANN MEHL BREMERHAVEN - LEHE on one side of tang and SOLINGEN MADE IN GERMANY on the other side.

Anyone know what I have here. It's one of the prettiest I've seen.

Very nice! Were those antique store finds? If so they were among the best shape I've ever seen out of an antique store.

Very nice acquisitions! I have a Hermann Mehl Bremerhaven razor, pictured below. It wears pretty pink scales..(Pink, the new black!) Good shaver, too. Yours will do nicely when honed. The only thing I don't like is the gold wash, that wears off if you even breath hard on it!

Hi Croaker, Thanks for recognising the razor. It is my current favorite.

I have to assume that Hermann Mehl of Bremerhaven was only the retailer as I can't find his name anywhere in the lists of cutlers. I can also find no reference to the coat of arms on the blade. I think the anchor may well be for Bremerhaven. Have you any idea who made these razors? and what date are they from? My feeling is that they have to be pre-to-mid-30's due to the" made in germany" reverse tang mark and before the re armament of Germany cut back on personal production.

The blade says Solingen. Do you know who made the blade?

PS. Would men buy a pink razor? or Would it be made for one of the special people depicted in the musical "Cabaret". Just a thought.:nj

The scutcheon is easy: it's Solingen's.

There is a Hermann Mehl GmbH sheet and stainless steel company, but it's in a different part of Germany (Kernen near Stuttgart) and its history goes back only fifty years.

Hermann Mehl also made table knives:

Maybe the locality names may help us further. The knive has 'Lehe - Wesermünde' and your razor has 'Lehe - Bremerhaven'. Lehe got its first church around 1100. City rights were granted in 1880. It became an independent city in 1920, and ceased to exist as such in 1924 when it helped form Wesermünde', which existed as a city until 1946. Lehe became part of Bremerhaven in 1947.

I followed the links but they were all in German. How do I translate the Wikkepedia page?
Guess you speak the language. I never learned any. Sorry.

Yes, the ones for Mehl, Lehe and Wesermünde are unfortunately only available in German; just Kernen and Bremerhaven have a wiki page in English.

You could use Yahoo! Babel Fish - Text Translation and Web Page Translation for a (crude) translation. Just enter text or an internet address and select the to and fro language.
