That is a good looking razor. I think you did just fine. +1 on trying 0000 steel wool and a mild polishing compound to bring back the shine. Never had ivory scales but many on here say that washer less pins are a sign that scales are ivory. Be sure and let us know how it turns out with the cleaning and shaving.

Have just purchased a 'shave ready' Slater Celebrated 1/4 Hollow Grind razor with ivory scales, it looks immaculately restored and I'm filled with anticipation, I'll just have to tell my wife the scales are made of cow bone!
I'm still trying to get over the statement about being reluctant to go the the antique store! Nice find,i wouldn't say that you over paid. I would have jumped at the chance and i'm pretty cheap.
