The Revisor is Here!

So I got the Revisor I decided on for my birthday. It's the 6-004 form their website--not actually my first choice, but they were sold out of the 6-0020. It's a lovely blade, though. The balance (as in the aesthetic balance, not the actual physical balance) is really good. Well proportioned, with good attention to the details. The gold wash is even (for now) and well applied. The etching is very nice, too...it shows a lot of good details.

In use, the razor fits my hand well. I'm not sure how to explain it, but the grip just seemed to fall into my hand right away, and it was very comfortable to hold. I hadn't even realized that MATTERS until I held this one.

It isn't perfect, though...the scales are a bit uneven at the butt, so the spacer is clearly visible when you look at the face of the razor straight on. Also, there are some minor grind marks on the tang which don't please me immensely. However, it is a hand made razor, and it is a very very NICE razor, and I'm happy with it.

I shaved with it this morning, and it was good. Not great, but good. The edge is clearly shave ready, just not FANTASTIC shave ready. Hoglahoo, for example, put a better edge on my Wapi.

But I like it, and it's fun to use, and I'm a happy customer!!!

BTW, Revisor customer service is great. Someone actually came in during their vacation to send my razor, even though my payment was late and missed their last day before everyone left. Very good, very polite, and very fast. Got it 4 days after posting!!!

Beautiful razor! Shame about the imperfections, but maybe we put a little too much importance on that here?

I've got 6-0010 and really enjoy it.

I had to go back and look at mine and I don't seem to have those kind of imperfections. Lucky I guess. Be sure to let Revisor know about it. let us know what they say.

It shaves great and that's where the rubber meets the road.

I have been using it with the factory edge. Did you hone yours?

I want to eventually get a few more from them in that style of blade (6/8 shoulderless).

Thank you! I'm also thinking about more of them...and I'm talking to them about some different styles of 8/8...

I'll let them know about the problems, but I'm honestly not too worried about it. It's a small worry, and a very nice razor...

I haven't honed mine, but I also didn't even strop more than 20 laps. I'll give it a good stropping and try it again before I worry about honing. I take it you're satisfied with the factory edge though? That's good.

dkapp, it's not your connection...they've disappeared for me, too. I had them linked from my blog. Maybe that's the reason? Anyway, here they are.

They were willing to put the same blade I already have in any one of a number of scales as seen in the pic below. Love the scales on yours, BTW.

I have a 6/8 round point with an etched blade. Very good shaving razor when the edge is set. I have heard them compared to DoubleDucks but I have not had the opportunity to use one so I can not comment on that. I put my blade in a set of figured red nara scales. Enjoy using it.

Thanks for re-posting the images. The sweeping lines of the shoulderless blade is stunning. I really need to add one to my collection.

How's the goldwash on it now Jim? Gorgeous looking razor by the way. Everything went into that design is remarkable. Isn't too ostentatious either. Very nice!

I know it's unrelated but somewhat related my Dovo Best scales are misaligned. It's loose on the pivot but I haven't tried hammering light to rectify it. It doesn't affect the shave in the least so long as I've tang firm grasp. ;) It's still great shaver nonetheless. :Beer:

Are imperfections that common? Bah it's hand made razor and it's not shoddy so who am I to spew my carcass?

Hey Ivan,

The gold wash has held up fine...surprisingly!

I had forgotten about this thread. I contacted Revisor about the issues and they were very very helpful, and are compensating me for the errors. The problems are very minor, and the response was extremely satisfactory...so I'm happy!

Here is my Revisor. I got lucky and picked it up on ebay months ago at a reasonable price. Thomas is a very nice fellow to deal with and it is a heck of a good shaver. Full hollow HC steel and like JimR's came shave ready but not as shave ready as I like. It honed up easily and shaves nicely.

Jimmy I don't have any 8/8. How's the balance in general? That scale looks menacing. Very nice btw!

I suppose this is similar to 8-0003 or 8-0012 ( more like 8-0012 )

When you honed it, did you use 4 or 8k followed by finisher or was it not necessary?

This thread just popped up and I can comment on my Revisor and ask JimR a question:

I have a new Revisor, about two month's old now. Like JimR my first shave with it was less than fantastic. This turns out to have been my mistake. I overlooked the advice in the email I received from Revisor telling me it needed to be stropped before the first use. As a fairly new straight shaver I have had limited experience with "shave-ready" razors and the ones I have (except now the Revisor) all came with the advice to NOT strop it before the first use.

Once I stropped it, it shaved beautifully! It actually seems to be getting better with use, but I think that may be because I have adjusted my technique to match the razor a little better. It is now one of my two favorites.

Question for JimR -- now that you have had your Revisor for a bit what is your impression of its "shaveability"?

Bob who advised you not to strop your razor? That's odd mate.
Though I don't have a Revisor, I can tell you that when I got my Custom Livi, the shave wasn't pleasant as I'd hoped. It was only after stropping that it provided nice shave.

Thanks for the comments again guys, but this thread IS a bit older now...

Bob, the razor shaves great. I did give it a very minor honing and a good stropping, but since then it has been a great shaver.

Now I'm puzzled. Since they stropped it, executed all tests one could assume it should have provided a great shave. I'm not going to say their stropping techniques were poor. This is confusing. Unless, it wasn't stropped enough is only viable solution I can think of. Thanks Bob

The point is that they (Revisor) didn't strop it. That's why they didn't tell me not to. As a matter of fact they told me I did need to do so but I missed seeing that. I just assumed it would be like all the others. As I said in my first post it was my mistake.
