Here's my latest acquisition. It's an absolute beauty. It's gone straight to the top of my favourites, & I've not even tried it yet! Someone wanted it almost as badly as I did, so the bidding went a little silly. If it was one of you chaps, I hope there are no hard feelings.

Absolutely NOS, never honed, looks like it was never even removed from its sleeve. Unusually, it's marked up as a No 14, like the various Spanish razors.

It's just a hair shy of a full 8/8 with jimps top & bottom & it's stunning! Enjoy.

I have done a bit of research on the #14 grinds...

On one of the German forums there was talk that all #14 grinds are done by one grinder..
Now whether blanks were sent to him for grinding or what the actual arrangement was I have not found out for sure...

What I can tell you is that all #14 blanks (many more companies used them, not only Filarmonica) were (and are, the company still exists) made by the company of Hugo Herkenrath in Solingen, Germany.
I do not know if any of them (the earlier or the later ones) were actually ground in Solingen too. I'd think it's certainly possible as many companies let their razors be ground in Solingen and branded with their logos but there are other examples where companies only imported the blanks.
That's all I can tell you on this matter I'm afraid.


Please understand that the truth is elusive and that this is how myths get started is using only selective memory...So please don't take or read toO much into all this... it is simply some info I have been looking into...

That's an interesting tidbit...Now, sorry about the naive question:

1. Does that mean that Filarmonica and Friodur/Henckels used the same blanks (well at least for the #14)?

2. By that token, are Fili #14 and Friodur #14 (the one Ben has) essentially the same...aside from some logos and bells and whistles?

3. How about the newer Friodurs?

Soooooo many questions.

PS: Seems like there should be an encyclopedia of makers, the #, blank types etc that one can use as a correlative metric for deriving historic data from these razors.

Like I said it is just a bit of info, I have been researching since someone said exactly everything you just did, only stated as fact, where it just isn't fact, the only thing that is fact, is that they have a number 14 on them

For all we know that could be size to grind designation or a size to profile designation...

The center pics that Ben posted and the center pics of the Fili I posted look at the shoulder grind closely...
Not really the same are they, I wonder how different they really are, in hand this is why I get very leery when people try and promote things as fact until I look for myself and decide...

In fact if you browse this Razor club you will see quite a few #14 Fili's and just look at the shoulder cuts...

The problem is that the razor Ben posted is rather rare so finding a ton of pics of them is going to be a little tough hehehe
