A real nice piece with a handle of bone
For the past seven years or so I have been a big fan of the band Murder by Death. Almost a year ago they released a new album. On it was the track in the video below. The lead singer of the band, Adam Turla, had taken a two month solo backpacking trip through the Appalachians before recording the latest album. On the trip he, as the song states, attempted to shave with his Buck fixed blade. Of course his results were pretty much exactly what we would all expect.
So in an effort to thank him for years of entertainment and save him from further such issues I got it in my head to put together a razor for him.

I took some Dovo black bone replacement scales I had around and gave them a nice rounded shape instead of the blocky form they normally had and got that up to a fine polish as he mentions that the knife has a handle of bone in the song. I then found the perfect blade at a local antique store. The etching on the blade read "Our Favorite" and it comes from the Midwest just like the band. I threw the blade into one tumbler with plastic pyramids and some water in order to patina the whole thing and get the etching to stand out well again. Then I taped off the blade and put it in a polishing tumbler so that the spine and tang got nice and shiny. To finish it off I had this really nice case that came from the same town (Fremont OH) though a different manufacturer.

I gave him the razor and some direction as well as pointed to the beginner threads here after their show in Sacramento a week ago and he was ecstatic.
