Otto & Reynders N. York ***Massive***

I was send a razor and was notified about it being on the large side. Nothing I can't handle, right?.

When I opened the mailbox and took the parcel out I was struck by the amount of weight coming from that small parcel USPS box. Didn't think to much about it until I opened the box and nearly fell out of my chair. I have seen some large razors in my life, but this one blows them all away.

The wife called it a bayonet. That thing is a weapon. LOL. It's at least 1 inch longer than any other razor I have encountered. The scales are toast and will need to be replaced. Blade will need a good cleaning with some grinding and sanding to get the pitting off. But considering the age it's in real good condition. The weight is something else too. You can practically pump iron while shaving and work those triceps.

Anyway, thought I'd share this monster. Looking at the tang and stubby monkey tail I would place this razor around the mid 1800's or even earlier. If anyone has some information please let us know.

As comparison I've added a Filarmonica 14 EPBD and a Dubl Duck Dwarf.

I am sorry to inform you sir, but that is not a straight razor. That is an axe.

You can shave in the morning and then drop that thing into your pocket as your daily carry for self-defense...

Man, I saw that one on eBay but didn't realize it was that huge. That thing is a beast!

Giants need to shave too! Very cool, I like longer blades, but this one takes the cake.

The firm of Otto & Raynders manufactured fine surgical instruments and supplied the government during the Civil War of the United States (the reason I could not find anything on the razor catalogs or guides) This is a massive razor that maybe was used to shave other parts of the body and not the face...Ferdinand Otto sued John Reynders in the State Court and Patent Rights back in 1876 thus ending the partnership. I have appended their logo. HOG

I found it on Ebay and was particularly interested in it because it's possible to date it more precisely than most razors. The
company of Otto and Reynders was intact only between 1860 and 1875. That meant it was at least Civil War era and perhaps
used in the war itself although this cannot be proven.

It wasn't clear from the photo how large it actually was because it is much longer than normal razors and this length made it
appear not as wide as it is. It does measure 11/8 at its widest and weighs out at 5.7 ounces on an accurate postal scale while
the large 8/8 and 9/8 Wade and Butchers weigh in comparatively at 3.6 ounces. I have shaved with it, and there is a thread on
that as well. It was quite an experience, and I did survive and got a fine shave.
