Yes, I recently (just prior to Christmas) started using witch hazel and I must say I quite like it. A little seems to go a long way too.
James.
Never a shave without it for me:)
I started using it two years ago, and will not stop. Ever!
This may be a dumb question but are there any shave soaps or creams with witch hazel in them?
I use witch hazel with a shot glass of 91% rubbing alcohol mixed into a new bottle. Or lately I've been using sea breeze astringent
I use the same kind after every shave good stuff!! and that size bottle last a long time!!! and its cheap!
Hey Smiles,
It goes on after a cold water rinse before post-shave stropping. The bottle you show was also at the local supermarket at about $4.50. Next to it was the old plain jane bottle. I checked the ingredients and they appear the same. I took the fancy bottle back for the plain one at about 1/2 the cost.
I use the scented stuff "Thayers" sold at SRD. SWMBO didn't like the smell of the regular old witch hazel...
I need to get some of this stuff! It gets so much credit.
Try Ogallala Bay Rum aftershaves, they use witch hazel as a base. I love the limes and peppercorns one.
i just bought a bottle, but i think i got ripped off just because it was mixed with lavender. (355ml) 10$. has any one ever used witch hazel for pre-shave treatment or just post shave?
After seeing so many members use witch hazel I decided I must try this stuff. I purchased Thayers original formula and I must say its great stuff.
Post shave it really helps with razor burn and leaves the skin moisturised. Like I said great stuff.
I use the Thayers brand alcohol free. That's all I use for after shave and it works great!
I get Thayers at the grocery store for $10.I don't think you got ripped off.Check the link:
Thayers Alcohol-Free Lavender Witch Hazel Toner - $9.95 : Thayers Natural Remedies, Since 1847
well that makes me feel better. thanks for the link. i don't really get razor burn. what i do get is after a couple hours of finishing the ATG pass my skin will develop bumps not razor bumps. but like cold skin will like goose bumps. don't know why so ill try this stuff see if it helps. ill take a pic of it.
I buy Thayer's at Whole Foods for $9.95.
I buy Thayers as well, so far I have the Rose and Lemon bottles and I find them just right for me. Not over powering at all :)
Walmart is probably the best source for witch-hazel, provided you have one in your area. Most contain 14% alcohol so you may have to pay more by ordering online to get an alcohol free witch-hazel. I admit to using it after my cold water rinse. There is something special about the result. It is cooling without burning and stops small nicks from bleeding. However, I also support a minimalist approach to post-shave. I use only cold water if that is sufficient, then I move to witch-hazel if I need it. It is very effective.
Witch Hazel is my post-shave. Sometimes nothing else, or I'll splash on some after shave after the witch hazel. It closes pores and heals small nicks.
I'm thinking the Walmart brand that I bought was only a dollar or two, but I might be wrong.
Witch hazel is an astringent, in that applied topically, it causes tissues to shrink. That's where its value as a post shave treatment comes in -- capillaries feeding weepers get pinched off, stopping the bleeding.
It doesn't lubricate nor can i think of any way it might soften whiskers. You could give it a try, though, and let the rest of us know.
Morty -_-
I use Thayers Original with Aloe Vera ( alcohol free ) after my pass with the alum block........Really feels nice and tones up the skin for the after shave balm........
Nice. My last purchase was a bottle of Thayer's lavendar and a bottle of Thayer's cucumber. Personally, I like the 'bite' of alcohol and did the same thing you did by adding some to each bottle. In addition, I added about 6 drops of Lavendar essential oil into the lavendar and 4 drops of eucalyptus oil into the cucumber for a personalized touch.
I use Dickinson's too, great stuff!
Yeah, Dickinson's is great stuff. I also like Thayer's which we get here for around $10.00. I bought a bottle of Thayer's with rose for my wife and she likes it a lot. There is also available Murray & Lanman Agua Maravilla Witch Hazel. I'm nearly finished with my bottle of Dickinson's so I'lll probably try this again. I think it has alcohol but ever since I went into straight razor shaving I haven't used it. BTW, I put some lavender essential oil on the Dickinson's and it feels very good. I feel its astringency when I apply it sometimes for a quick shave with the DE, so I really wouldn't try it as a pre-shave.
